4 years ago I bought a 2011 LX570 from Texas. I loved it because it came with ARB front and rear bumpers and a bunch of other off road bits. Not a spot of rust. 4 years in the Chicago “rust belt” and the body and frame are still rust free. Toyota/Lexus has done their job building a solid vehicle. HOWEVER the rear ARB bumper was showing some signs of rust. This surprised me. So I decided to dive into it today. I waited because all the cap head bolts holding the step plate on were rusted and it was a going to be a job to get them out. So today armed with a rotary tool, I cut the heads off and knocked out the bolts. What was revealed underneath was way worse than I expected. 2 hours later after hitting it with the angle grinder with a wire cup and then a lap sanding disk it was back to decent shape. I hit it with a thick coat of Corroseal (this stuff is amazing) rust converter and it is looking really good now. Once dry I will hit it with some Rustoleum and it should be good for now. Eventually I’d like the bumper taken off and coated with bedliner. The aluminum step tracks are really pitted on the underside. I had no idea they would be so bad. This vehicle gets washed every 2-3 days during the winter to get the road salts off. I didn’t expect it to be so bad. Perhaps it is location on the vehicle that traps salt or perhaps it is just ARB’s powder coat was for crap. IDK
Here are some pictures.

Rust Converters are vastly underrated. I think they do a much better job of containing rust corrosion than most primers. Looks like it really needed it!

I've used the Eastwood's Rust Converter for years, but I'll have to try Corroseal now.

Hit me up for the rest of that truck bud. I spray Fluid Film out of my garage in Wheaton. The salt around here has been extreme these past few winters. My 200 and a Tacoma I spray every year are pictured. I picked mine up from TX with 23K miles in 2017 and I knew I had to do something to protect it. I got you. Thanks! Your truck looks great. Do you do any of the pre-treatment too? Or just the fluid film? I want to hit the bottom with Corroseal before FluidFilm.

Powder coat doesn't seem to hold up much better than paint here in Michigan on cars/trucks. Paint over primer seems to withstand pits and nicks better. My new ARB bar was not powder coated very thoroughly, had to do some touchup. And installing, I knocked the powdercoat off in many places. I'll probably need a new bullbar about the time the lower pinch weld in my upper hatch starts rusting through. Should be a lot easier to install a replacement.
