I am new to TLC's but always been a fan. We purchased a 72 FJ40 about a year ago when vacationing near San Diego and I am considering replacing the tires since it currently has some cheap road tires installed that I think detract from its mostly original appearance.

Can anyone suggest a new tire that would look more like OEM rubber? What is currently mounted is a Geo-Trac P235/75R15XL.

Thanks in advance, Jim

Hi all,

Jim, those 235/75R15 tires are close in size to the stock size from the factory (~29 inch tall.)

If you are looking for new "shoes" for the rig, consider 30X9.5R15 tires (these will fit on the stock wheels just fine.) I'd suggest a decent AT (all terrain) type of tire.

Good luck, and welcome to MUD! :D

Alan,

Thank you for the quick reply. I like the look of the BF Goodrich T/A in 33x10.5x15 but not sure if it will work with this truck since it is not lifted. Plus I am also not sure of the other clearances needed.

I was told by the guy I typically buy tires from that the size you mentioned might be difficult for him to get??

To be fair he has not seen this truck and I might just need to take it out of the warm dry garage and let him check it out. I was just hoping that they would fit without too many modifications.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated. I don't intend to do much to this other than the tires and the few minor items I have added. I like its patina!

Thanks,
Jim

You shouldn't have any issues with a 30x9.50 or 31x10.50 tire on stock rims. Check out the Cooper S/T MAXX in 30x9.50 or 31x10.50, that's what my next set will be.

Traditionally, I believe 7.50R16s on split rims are "correct" in terms of originality. Anything around that size will look and feel right, and not put any undue stress on stock components.

I'm rather partial to Yokohama Super Hajaris (which are OEM fitted on Middle-Eastern and South African 70 series) or for a more rustic look and feel, Michelin XZLs. If you're anticipating a lot of deep sand, Michelin XS is the way to go.

To my knowledge this model is not available in the US. Check out Yokohama Y735B. Slightly more aggressive than the Hajaris but a great all around tire in a 7.50 R16. I use them on my 60.
