ok, my brain isn't functioing well at all today (too little to eat, i think), so i hope this isn't an obvious question. you can see from the pic below, i have an upper coolant hose that is 'sucking in' after the motor is turned off. i have a new 180° thermostat on the way, but could i have a problem with the radiator as well? something appears to be 'closed off' and not allowing the system to de-pressurize correctly. any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks.

one more thing, truck currently runs very cool - near bottom of the gauge.

The coolant system is a closed system, except the overflow bottle. So check if the hoses into the bottle, and the tube inside the bottle are not clogged.
To me it looks like air in the system, since the expansion and contraction of the coolant itself should not account for such a big volume change.
Also it would probably be a good idea to change the hose.
I hope other's will add their opinion...

Yeah, I would say you have air in the system too. Check for the correct installation of the overflow bottle, like Jan said. Also check that dip tube in the overflow bottle doesn't have a hole or crack. When the car gets hot, the level in the bottle should go up, when the car cools down, the level should go back down. Also check or replace your radiator cap. I'd also think about replacing that upper hose. If it's been deforming like that for a long time, it might be cracked or otherwise damaged.

i second 2mbb's comments, you most likely have a bad rad cap, that is preventing suction from your coolant recovery bottle. that is how your engine coolant system equalizes when hot or cold.

What the other guys said. Replace that hose ASAP and has the truck always run cool? Did you remove the thermostat? If not the old thermostat in the housing may jammed open and is acting like there is no thermostat in there. Guage could also be faulty.

Better cool than than hot:cool: but not to cool because that can be bad too.

Air in the system will make for a low temp reading because the temp pickup won't read the temp of air.

Same as above. New hose (might as well do them all) and new cap. New thermostat while you are there. Let us know how it runs after that stuff.

While you are doing the hoses you might as well flush and re-fill. Toyota Red coolant is really great. I get lower temps with it. Longer life for all the cooling parts. It's expensive, but it's good.
