Had my first real test of my new FJC capabilities in 8 inches of REALLY slippery Idaho mud. It seemed more in control using only the ATrak than it did with rear locker also on. Is that normal or just my inexperience with the FJ?

I would not use my locker in those conditions, yes...use ATRAC and you will have more control...

Thanks! It's amazing how much technology has changed driving in any condition.

ATRAC is amazing as it can be used in many different situations with great success. As a rule of thumb, you will not want to use the rear locker anytime you do not want the rear end sliding out, since this can be a side affect of the rear locker in some scenarios such as the mud you describe. Snow and ice are another such example of a time when using the rear locker is not advised. That is unless you are doing some wheeling in an off camber situation in which one rear tire is going to lose traction or get some air time...

Thanks guys! My son in law pointed me to the Mud as the best place to learn about my new FJC and get new ideas for mods. It's amazing how much info is on here and what an interesting bunch of folks participate.

Indeed, there is a wealth of great info here and a bunch of people who can help out with nearly any situation in my experience.

We did have a great time out there, even though I took the 80 sideways trying to get out of that slippery mess. For those reading along, I did stay in control but JT and my youngest son watched from behind as we were trying to make our way out and into sturdy hard pack. We even got a chance to see some wild horses. What a day! Here are a few pics from that day...

Sideways??? Since I was following you why could I see the grill of the 80?

An outstanding job of keeping it on the trail!

OK. Mostly sideways, but not quite 180... :D
