My 79 FJ 40 has been out of service for some time. I've been having problems with fuel pumps. I've put three on now and with this third one, I've realized that something inside the block is breaking the pump.

We put it on and it started making a pinging noise and I could see the pump vibrating or rocking. But the mechanic said it was running fine and hadn't broken... he thought that maybe it just needed to be broken in. We let it run for about 5 minutes, but then as I was driving it home, it died on me. The carb was bone dry, so I'm guessing that this pump too was broken. I haven't had a chance to pull it out and look at it, but I'm 90% sure that's the case.

What would cause this and how can it be fixed?

Missing the spacer?

You know, I ordered it (and paid for the spacer) from CCOT and it didn't come with a spacer, only 4 gaskets. The mechanic only used one of them.

Must have spacer (#4). Arm too close to cam otherwise. Break. :D

Okay, that's the problem then. I swear I'm not really this stupid in life... only with my truck, but hey, it's a labor of love and I'm still learning. Slowly but surely.

Thanks Dave!

Wierd - it's fuel pump weekend. I replace mine this afternoon, and another guy on the 60 forum (Noah I think) had the same problem as yours and the arm fell off inside the oil pan.

for a pump, go to a loacl parts store and get a Carter brand FP for your 2F, it an OEM fuel pump for about $50 and it will come with the spacer and gaskets.
