Anyone have any pics of an 80 with the fender flares removed? I saw the 5 threads on this, and the one referenced pic, but it's hard to make out from a side view. Any other pics out there? Thanks!

Don't do it. The flares add so much body protection.Without them you can expect alot of body damage. I have bounced mine off trees that would of did my panels in if it were not for the flares. So don't do it.

Lets hear what Starsky has to say ...

You know, I’ve seen few pop off, rather then protect. Even if they stay on, if you wheel in the bushy stuff after a while they start looking like shiat from the scratches. :flipoff2:

Would you rather scratches or dented panels?

Wrench's buddy doesn't have any flares on his.

One of these days, I'll get around to taking mine off and bedlining the truck. Never spent the time though figuring out which bedliner to use. :whoops:

LOL!!!!

moralien, if you had to pack all that crap on your roof, now I know why your face looks like your avatar :flipoff2:

Somewhat on topic.. There's a flareless '91 FJ80 for sale in Spokane if anyone is interested. I've seen maybe two stock flareless 80s. Always thought they were ugly. Odo has been screwed with (reads 61K, carfax says 150K+) and the sales guys were complete asses so I opted to stay away from it.

Very strange this topic came up today... Just removed the other three flairs this morning. I had been missing my passenger front for some time now, with the 17's and 35's the offset is just too much for the flairs and they've been munched. I opted for the added clearance of no flairs. Another plus is that I have a great view of the front tires peeking out the driver window about 1" to 2"'s worth off the fender, a bit easier to spot just where my tires are when lining up on obstacles.

Sorry no pic's, yet

Body Damage?

I sure dont miss mine... They only real protecion i saw they were giving me was from mud and rocks getting thrown up everywere..... I Only took 1 of mine off.. all of mine were tore or popped off after a few wheeling trips..... I dont care that much about body damage anyways but dont really see how they are going to "save" me from body damage? if you are into a rock or tree its not going to stop your panels from denting or taking a scratch....

Reason i Lost mine was simple ... 80s are big... some trails are small... I didnt want to be worrying about flares and mud flaps eveytime i am on a ledge or in a tight place.

I told myself i would Put some sort of lining on after mine came off...... its been 7 months now......... add it to the todo list....

They came standard here with no flares on poverty pack barn door models,a nd the RV which was a GXL without flares or 8" wheels. [which mine was]

I fitted some flexi flare, to cover the 36" swampers on the GXL rims.

Cool effects on the .img Darren

After having all of mine torn off at one point or another, I re-did the mounting system so I can pull the two bolts at the ends of each and slide them off. Took about 5 minutes to take them off at the Cliffs last weekend. They look much better on, especially with the black flares on the white truck, but I liked having them off on the trail. The downside was I put the truck where it wouldn't have fit with the flares on and did dent my left fender. I covered up the dent with the flare the next day.
It is very good to be able to remove them and clean under them. Stuff collects there and I found rust hidden under the flares.

How are you attaching them in the middle? Plastic clips? The back ones were a 10 minute job, but the fronts were a PITA. Please tell me more. I gooped up all the holes with silicone when I reassembled mine but I'm still concerned about rust.

More on topic, I liked the look of mine without the flares and I considered filling the holes and leaving them off. I Rhino-lined them, black flares on a white truck, all the guys love them and the women, not so much. Go figure!

I've read here that with the OME 2" you can fit up to 33" tires. By removing the flares, can you go bigger?

I built clips out of 14 guage sheet metal. All of the plastic webbing was already busted out from ripping them off with trees. I rivited the clips to the flare so they slide down over the t-shaped peices. I can take some pics if there is interest.
