For those that are considering Durabak smooth for their rig need to look below. I was told by the owner that it could be sprayed...not. I applied DP90 first then applied the red. I tried a 2.0 tip and thinking I needed a larger tip for the thickness of the product. I sprayed it four times without getting adequate coverage then applied it by hand. This is what came after.

You can clearly see the rough on the floor and the smooth on the rollbar tube in front of you.

You be the judge...

That is depressing. I really wanted to do the smooth as an external coating. I know what interiors look like with the rough once dirt gets on them and its a bitch to make it look clean.

The durabak rep told me that you have to use thin coats if you spray, and it is harder to make it look even if you roll it. That roll bar doesn't look very good though so I will have to reconsider. Really didn't want rough on the exterior though.

:frown:

Why don't you consider a cheap ACE hardware paint? 30/gallon and you can retouch it up for cheap?

I ended up calling them to discuss it today. I'll know more when the decision maker comes back to work next week.

Mainly don't want to paint because I don't want to repaint... ;). I will either go with rough or just paint it. Thanks for the info.

I was on their website this. May or may not be helpful...

DURABAK Application Tips

  1. For smooth DURABAK™, Graco Bulldog 33:1 with 21-23 thou. tip.
    • Use a respirator with chemical absorbing cartridges, such as Binks #40-128.
    • Before starting the job, spray a few short bursts away from the surface to test that everything is working properly.
    • If DURABAK™ does not spray easily and evenly, thin with Xylene.
    • Spray an even coat over the entire surface to be covered. Be careful not to apply coat too thickly.
    • When surface becomes tacky – between 20 minutes and one hour, depending on weather conditions – spray second coat. Extreme climactic conditions of heat, humidity and cold can shorten or lengthen this period.
    • Intercoat / curing time can be significantly shortened by use of special accelerator (see section on accelerator).

did you ever get this worked out? I'm considering painting my exterior in durabak smooth. I just put down the rough in the floor and am pleased with how it turned out.

Just ordered this for this reason, I dont trust the smooth durabak, the fine grizzly grip is my choice right now, I have the rough Durabak on a few things and its rough alright.

Grizzly Grip - Coating for truck bed liners, boats, and more. try the fine finish. I should have my project done next weekend.........I hope.

Gallon, Im doing rockers, up around on flare line, quart might be fine but Id rather be safe........

i didn't see the "fine" on the we site. i am interested in this. I couldn't deal with the poor reviews of D-bak smooth, and the rough just looked like it would be too, well, rough. I'm looking at covering the entire rig... i might have to get a hold of those guys.
