Out of curiosity, as far as pricing on these go, the hzj @ landcruisers direct is up for $18k. Is this what to expect as a normal range in the US?

Pricing is a product of options and condition. You can definitely get an HZJ73 for $10,000-$13,000. It will not be in the same condition as what you will see from LCD. Trucks that have been in Canada, trucks that are wrecked/repaired and recently imported, and rusty but reliable trucks from Europe are all options in that price range.

Steve, thank you for the words of wisdom!

Thanks for the great info. I'll be in touch Steve. I'm going to be down near Rolla in June. I'm going to try and plan a side trip out to Springfield then to check out your shop.

The research continues...

And you were not around in the US market in the mid 1980's when they were replacing almost every single 2L/2L-T head in the US market during that time.

Then, bye-bye Toyota diesels for the US market.

2L-T was the beginning and end of Toyota diesels in the US market.

That might be but the 2LT in the Euro spec LJ7X's is heavily underestimated and unappreciated,I had many of those with fuel pumps turned up on 33's ragging them trough mud pits and forests and they never disappointed me or left me stranded.......with engine troubles, lots of other things left me stranded ;-)

That would be a 2LT. They get a bad rap because of their cylinder head problems, but apparently that is much more common among JDM automatic models. I've heard that the euro-spec 2LTs that are backed by a manual tend to run cooler and are thus less prone to cracking.
Yeah I'm familiar with the 2LT but was meaning the 2.5l VM engine, it's generally considered pretty average
