Hey all I'm new here, obviously ;) I'm looking at an 87 for a DD. Its auto xtracab with the 22re and 159K on it. It was recently repainted and appears to be stock. They are asking 2k for it. Is this good or high or what? Just looking for some opinions. I believe it is all stock at least the truck did not seem lifted and the wheels and tires were stock 15s. Thanks for any help!

The 80's Toyota trucks were very prone to rust, so depending on where you live it could be an issue (just about anywhere except the southwest US). Mainly the frames, which rust from the inside out, so when you can see it it's usualy too late. So go over the frame carefully, especially anywhere it turns up/down from horizontal, above the rear wheels, and where the tank sits against the frame rail. Body mounts are the next place to look.

Also see if you can find out when the timing chain was last replaced, they're good for 90K mi or so. And look at the tranny fluid, it should be red, not brown/burnt looking.

$2K sounds a little high to me, but used vehicle prices vary across the country.

Thanks for the advice but they ended up selling it before I could get back for a closer look.

If you are still looking, I would try and find a 84' or 85', (straight axle).

You did say for a DD, but I am guessing if you are on this board you will want to wheel it too. Just my $.02

I 2nd the frame inspection, and a common place for them to fail is where the rear leafs mount to frame. If there are holes on frame, or even thin spots I would nix the deal. Worthless with frame damage, unless you have lots of free time and can weld.

For what you are describing I would say $2000 is MAX., should look real clean for that much. IMO

I just sold my 87 yesterday. reg cab, 22r, carb, pretty much stock, was in good shape, got $2,600. I think 2 k for a extended sounds like a good price. Comments to the rust problem though, I concer with the guy who stated about it. The bed on mine was rusted, all else was fine. The beds on 87 were made in usa, and where 2 parts, put together. If you remove the inner bed liner, alot of leaves, dirt, etc collects and will rust em from inside out. You can see where the 2 halves meet from the outside, about 8" from the bottom of the bed. The cab and front were made, guess in Japan, and are much better. You could tell even the difference in the paint on mine, so bottom line, the beds are a problem on these trucks. 22r was ok, had alot of valve train noise, and some oil leaks, other than that, the truck drove very good, straight, and if its in good shape, I would recomend it. 2k is not much at all to spend on a yota.
