I dropped my 1FZFE head off at Boyette's machine shop in Raleigh on Monday with specific direction to let me know if it was warped more than spec of 0.0079" (from forum). Picked up the head today and they shaved 0.012". Boyette's said they worked with T Hoff an import machine shop and both agreed that the 0.012" would not cause any problems. I've been scouring through the forum and all indications are that the 0.012" is a problem and I should look for a new head.

What do you all think?

Mike

Where are you foreseeing a problem? There will be a slight bump in compression, the tensioning device will pull up timing chain slack, and you should have plenty valve clearance provided you're using a stock cam.

Regardless of the amount of shave they pulled my bigger concern would be how warped the head was when they got it. Too much warp (or twist) and the cams will bind.

Rice thanks for the response. The first question they asked me at the shop was was I able to turn the cams when I removed them. The cams moved with no problems during disassembly per FSM. To your first questions, I really don't know enough to answer that. My concern was from reading threads on how much the head could be decked and the specs.

After a couple cold ones tonight, I'm going to proceed with putting everything back together and see what happens. I've decided this is a long term rig and if there are further issues with this engine then an LS or diesel is in its future. Just need it to hold out until my daughter and son graduate from college in a couple years and then I'll be flush with cash for all kinds of mods.

Is it possible you are confusing how much "warp" is acceptable as compared to how much can be shaved to get it straight? If it is .0079 means it needs to be shaved, if under, you "could" bolt it back on. It was out of spec, so they shaved it .012 to get it flat. As Rice said above, you will get a slight increase in compression, shouldn't be a bad thing assuming things in the low end are solid.

I've had T.Hoff do a couple jobs for me, always pleased with their work...

Mtbcoach, yes there is a very high probability that I'm confused on this issue. That's why I was hoping that the incredible collective wisdom of ONSC to educate me which you and Rice have provided and I appreciate it. The guys at Boyette's were incredibly knowledgeable about all engine types and did some extra work with eroded coolant passages. I trust the work done, just wanted Toyota specific confirmation.

I apologize, most of my posts on this board, in my short time make me seem like a whiny b**ch. I'm usually a whiny b**ch Monday-Thursday.
