Alright... so I live in CT and am still fairly far away from finishing my project but I wanted to know how I am going to get it registered...

currently the only things I am keeping from my original purchase is the drive train

new frame is enroute.. may have a title.. and i am probably going to go fiberglass or aluminum.. so no title with the body

i didn't want to go removing vin plates and mess with that since i have read on mud that some have had gotten in pretty big trouble with that

sooo I called up CT DMV and they had no idea what i was talking about and they told me to call up the wethersfield office where they deal with composite vehicles - apparently this is the way that they would like me to go but i am weary - i don't know if the 2F (no smog) will pass the emissions they set for these vehicles - and I am also unsure of what this will do to insurance.. anyways here are some links -

DMV: Composite Vehicles

Connecticut DMV Registration for Custom Built, Kit Cars, & More - DMV.ORG

anyone delt with this before?

and for some information i asked at both places if i could remove the vin plate and put it on the new body and they didn't even tell me not to... i didn't get it.

thanks all

I have not had the same issue but a similar episode with vin varification...

Recently I registered my 77' 40 in NH. I Live in CT, but have a cabin in NH. It is really cheap to reg. up there, (less than $20). At the same time I drove it up there to use it for a few weeks.

In the process of tring to get insurance, all the Ins. carriers in NH wanted rediculous amounts to cover it cause' It it was not a primary residence. I then tried to insure through my CT guy and he said it had to be regged in CT, to be insured by a CT insurance carrier.

So I then decided to reg. in CT. I went to New Britain with my current reg from NH and no title. Well they did not seem to care about the title cause' it was so old but they wanted to do a Vin varification and I said that it was in NH and that would be a real hassle for me to drive it back to CT just to varify the plate.

The lady helping me went to ask her boss and came back to say it was OK and I got plates.

So...If I were you maybe try going there with a suit on and act really stand up, (maybe you are already I dont know), anyways, give them a similar story, tell them it is an old farm truck and you will be leaving it up there, you just need some plates so you can get insurance???

I dont know, I got lucky I guess, maybe it would work for you...That is all I got.

Good luck,

If you can, stay away from composite vehicle registrations. If you build it in 2008, it will be a 2008 vehicle regardless of the parts and be required to pass 2008 vehicle emissions.

If you have the original registration from your project vehicle, everything else is repair.

The DMV does a VIN verification only if the vehicle comes from out of state. They usually do not compare the vehicle VIN to the frame. Remember, older vehicles do not have a 13 digit VIN. Older vehicles tend to get less of a "inspection" than newer vehicles.

Seeing you are repairing your original rusted body with a new AL or fiberglass one, you can just move the plate to the new body.

If the vehicle is 25 years old or older, no emission testing is needed.

Also, I have a car title for one of my 55's but not the other (both 77's) and not for my wife's 79 FJ40. CT no longer requires a title for older vehicles (not sure of the cut off year) so a bill of sale and / or the old registration is all that would be required. Remember, if the last registration is from out of state then the DMV will do a VIN check.

Good luck with your project and remember, it's a repair.

alright cool thats the info i wanted to here. thanks guys

I'm assuming the '76 in your sig line? Like Joe said, stay away from composite inspection and Wethersfield. For the '76 you need two matching VIN plates for the body and a bill of sale to get a registration. If the bill of sale is from out of state you will have to bring it to a DMV office to have the VIN verified (if you know a LEO they can make a statement so you don't have to bring it down).

Been down that road many times. Register it "Early American", there are no restrictions other than having to be 25 years old, but it will go on your town's grand list and taxed at a value of no more than $500.

It is a state thing. If you plan to sell it to someone on Ebay for $40,000 you'll need to rethink what you'll do..................if you plan to sell it as a used car in the future to someone local, no problem. Send me a PM if you want to talk about it.

X2 on the antique plates...

Just got my tax bill for the last 6mos. It was $6 & change.

Title cutoff is 20 years where you don't need one if older than 20 years just a bill of sale,Emissions is any vehicle built 1981 or older is exempt in ct. If the vin you have has not been registered within the last 10 years in ct they will require either a original title last registration certificate in ct or to have the vin verified which consists of going to any emissions capable garage to have them look at the tag and sign off on the paper. Just put vin plate on new body,The vehicle being that old they don't really care about them, not worth anything to them.
