Bringing the family for a Colorado road trip end of July - will tent camp for most of a week. A couple of folks in our group don't sleep well much above 6,000 ft - I know everything in Colorado is pretty high - any camping suggestions???

Thanks,
Gil

Most folks that come to Colorado in July come to get their "Rocky Mountain High". Camping below 7000' will mean warm temps. I live at 6200' and daytime highs are usually 90-95 most all summer. Sometimes beating 100. But if there is an area that is below 7k and not too hot it might be up in the far NW corner, specifically Browns Park.

I suggest Avalanche Creek outside Carbondale. It's at around 6300 ft. Get there on a week day to get a spot under the trees. The creek itself is beautiful and the hiking trail is amazing. Plus you're a stones throw away from wheeling up to the Crystal Mill and Lead King Basin.

Thanks for the ideas! I'll check them out. I'm very much looking forward to seeing Colorado - can't believe I've stayed away so long!

You could try Vallecito Res. outside of Durango. Just over 7k' and within easy range of all the high stuff of the San Juans to the north. On the other side, Ridgeway St. Park is right at 7k and again, within range of some primo 'wheelin'.
