I am heading to the Silverton area this Friday for a week of cruiser trail riding and ATV fun with my 7 year old. Anyone going to be out in that area starting Aug 3 - 12? I would love to have a truck or two with us. I plan to do as many of the trails as I can around there, including Telluride, Imogene, Black Bear if I find others to go. No set plans, just wheeling, camping and taking it easy.

Any suggestions would be welcome also!

Thanks

Wow, sounds like a great time. You gonna bring that pretty new strap with ya? Sorry we didn't get to meet, I didn't realize who you were until after. I did see the 60 though! Have fun and be safe.

You are in for some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Is the kid in to trains? It's expensive but you should take him on the Durango / Silverton train.

Thanks! I was hoping to meet some of you guys, but never did get around to it. That strap is almost too pretty to take out. I think I'll just display it in my office!

Hopefully my driveshafts are here today and I will actually get to drive the 60 again. Towing it out there and then not being able to wheel it kinda defeated my shakedown cruise. I guess I'll shake it down in the mountains.

Did you win something in the raffle?

Colorado-Boy, thanks for the info. He may not be into trains, but I am! Might be a nice break from banging around the mountains. You think reservations will be needed during the week?

I'll do that tonight. In the mean time here is a summary of the trip.

Matthew and I left Friday morning and got to Silverton area Saturday afternoon late. On the way we stopped on the continental divide, checked out the Royal Gorge, river rafted near Gunnison, and generally took our time. I was flat towing the 60 behind my F350. The F350 was loaded with my ATV, and tool box and personal stuff. The 60 was loaded with Matthew's Polaris 50, camping stuff, 47qt fridge/freeze cooler and a few other small things.

Once in Silverton, we camped at Red Mountain campgrounds for the night. It was raining and never stopped while we were there. Big storms, lots of rain, made for some interesting trails. We did Ophir twice, Imogene, Black Bear, Cinnamon, Red mtn , Engineers, Alta lakes where we remote camped one night. Alpine loop, Gulches, Yanky boy, and Cimmaron. We also took the narrow gauge train from Silverton to Durango.

With all the rain, the tent started leaking and I finally trashed it. Will need a new better quality tent.

We then drove 10 hours in rain to Clorado Springs/Castle Rock area. There we met up with Jim (2BADFJS) and Cyver (84CRUISER). Awesome guys, and with Cyver's help, I got a smokin deal on 4 Bridgestone Dueler REVO's for my F350. Also got to sit and visit and have a few brewskies with them. I hauled back a set of 2BAD's sliders for my fellow cruiser here in KC as well. Whilst there, Matthew and I also went out on Dakan Road and did about 13 miles on the ATV's. That was the only trail we did with the ATV's. It was a blast. I was not aware of an ORV sticker needed, and if not for a friendly Forest Services ranger, we would have each gotten a $75 fine.

Inverted shackle coming off Imogene pass, an oil leak (bad) from the rear output shaft on the transfer case, flat tire on the 60 coming home and bad tires on the F350 was the only problems. 4wheelparts.com must use the cheapest valve stems there possibly is. This is the second time I have had problems with valve stems on wheels/tires combo I purchased from them.

Flat towing the 60 was at times scary in the rain. Twice it pushed my truck sideways on sharp curves. I moved everything from the 60 to the truck, except the small Polaris ATV, and it still did it. Even at slow speeds. I have towed trailers all my life, from small utility to a big 33' 5th wheel trailer, and never felt unsafe. With no braking assistance from the 60, and by nature it wanting to go straight, I will probably not flat tow it again.

I missed the Rising Sun get together due to duty calling back home. Met some great people and had a blast! I will post some pics later tonight.

Thanks, once I get set up on some photo site, I will post a link to the rest. Imogene was probably the one that had the most variety of technical driving. Rocks, small ledges, loose gravel, narrow roads and such. It took all of a morning to do it. It poured on us most of the time which made it even more interesting. Two water crossings up to the doors was part of it. I forgot to take a picture of a Superduty F250 crewcab on Imogene pass. He came in the back way, and could not reach the summit, but I was amazed at what he did come across. I saw him later on down at the bottom, and he had side damage from his front door back to the tail light. I could not believe he was up there with it.

Black bear, to me, is only difficult due to the switchbacks and slippery conditions. Those switchbacks were something else. Awesome views though. Sad part is I had to travel with a pack of jeeps. One guy lost his powersteering, and that made for a tough drive down. he made it ok, and we spotted for him a lot.

I will probably revisit that area next year, on my way to Moab. Hopefully with the FJ40 by then.

Those are great shots!!! I'm looking forward to seeing all of them.!!!
Later...
