Any 'hands on' feedback on Colemans' hot water on demand water heater. I guess I am getting a little soft in my old age - but this looks very tempting ...

I bought one on sale at Canadian Tire, haven't had a chance to use it yet. It's rather large, and comes in a very nice soft bag to pack it around in. The shower hose is too short, and has no on/off control. Once the dial is turned on to the temperature you want, the water runs freely.
The warm setting is lukewarm, good for a shower to get the dust off. I didn't notice until after the fact, but it has a hot setting, the problem with that is you have to hold the dial there otherwise it just flips back to warm. From the review I read its not hot enough for tea or coffee. It comes with a 12v and 110v chargers, and a collapsible water container as well.

How much was it on sale?

Guys,

I've own a Zodi water heater. Don't get one. The Coleman is much better. But the way to go is with an on board heat exchanger. Unlimited hot water at your desired temp.
If water is limited, you can slow down the pump to conserve water.

Actually, I think there are some decent plans inthe biodiesel and alternate fuels section for a decent heat exchanger set-up. BC4x4 forum also has plans for a redneck hot tub which is basically a coil of copper tubing in a fire with some hose and a tarp filled with water and sunk into hole dug in the beach sand. Once you get the convection current going, there's no need to pump. If you lazy about digging, then just bring the kiddies pool.:hillbilly:

too much tonnage - is right

Well guys- I looked at one. Its huge, heavy and expensive. I have read on the web the plastic control knob breakes easily and the hot water zone on the control is spring loaded, which requires constant presssure for hot water.

My conclusion is its too big, heavy and awkward for our trips. I think it is designed for base camping at a provincial park with the women folk and kiddies in mind.

Standard kit, I don't have anything negative to say, pretty much unlimited hot water (as long as your truck is running) I used it again at Whipsaw last year, thought maybe the diesel wouldn't get hot enough but it worked fine. You could draw the water from a 5 gal. bucket, but I usually just throw the feed hose into a lake or stream. Of course, it is more s***e to carry around, but to have a hot shower at the end of the day is worth it. I'll have it on the truck for May long, problem there is water source. I'd prefer not to be drawing Fraser River water, and I don't think I could get my truck down to Churn. I find that this set up works best with lakes and slower moving streams/creeks/rivers. (Less crap to clog the intake filter).

That would explain why I bought, I'd just prefer to be one of the 'unwashed' mass and wear the same underwear for weeks :p

No shower for this trip, I might have time to get the heat exchanger on, but the winch, battery, roof rack etc... have priority, Go Figure!
