1986 desmogged 2f. Recently started spark knocking and cutting off while driving. Typically happens @ 2000+ rpm. It won't do it in my driveway, only while I'm driving. I had a tune-up in January (about 1500 miles ago). I was planning on changing the coil w/ igniter, but finding issues getting the igniter. Is it necessary? Is there an easy alternative? Any suggestions on brands?

Question: what evidence do you have that is suggesting the igniter/coil are bad, besides the miss at higher RPM’s? My first recommendation would be to replace those non-OEM spark plug/coil cables with Toyota factory cables and see if that resolves the issue. Next I would check the distributor rotor and cap and replace with OEM parts. Beware that Rock Auto sells stuff that they say is “OEM” but is not. I source all of these types of items from my dealer. If the problem persists, then check the coil. Igniters rarely go bad so this would be my last resort if all else fails. I would also check all of your engine ground straps as well.

Let us know how it goes and good luck!

Cheers, James
