As I backed out if the garage yesterday the check engine light came on and the LC was running rough. The ScanGague error code confirmed it was the #5 coil pack. No biggie as I carry a spare. For some reason I decided to clear the error code. Once the code cleared the check engine light went out and the Cruiser ran fine. So that's why I'm confused. How could clearing the error code fix the bad coil pack?

I replaced the coil pack anyway for the road trip.

If I'm not mistaken...the light was due to a single misfire. If you reset it the light would not come back on until the next misfire.

Sometimes I wait til a second time before I replace the coil pack just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. Other times I just do what you did. Swap it for peace of mind then keep the questionable one as a spare. Might be good enough to get you home some day.

Update. The code came back today so it must be something else.
The code is p0355 which is cylinder 5 misfire. I replaced the coil pack again and the spark plug. The code won't reset this time and it s running rough again. Any ideas?

No it was stupidity. I replaced #5 coil pack 18 months ago. Instead of verifying which cylinder is 5 I went off my flawed memory. Turned out I replaced 3 not 5. All is well now and lesson learned.
