OK so I am getting code p0770 related to the shift solenoid E and I have read a couple threads on the matter -

https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series...-transmission-advise-have-valve-body-out.html
https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/382486-p0770-code-wtf.html

I have decided this is beyond my range and therefore I will need to take this in for service.

Couple questions about this:

A) should I go to the Toyota dealership or should I go to my regular mechanic?
B) Am I correct that 'power' ATF flushes are bad? How does the dealership typically flush the system?
C) is the total fluid capacity of the trans + TC 12 or 16 qts? (Very little trans info in the manual)

Current miles @168k

Service history related to the vehicle at the dealership

@ 120k - replace 4 qts T-IV
@ 134k - trans flush replaced 12 qts Dexron/Merco
@ 139k - trans flush replaced 12 qts T-IV
** NOTE - p0770 code appears / flush, replace, reset code, no further diagnose, tech(s) 1258 what does 1258 mean?
@ 150k - complete fluid exchange including TC "WPF2001 Transmission 2 pt kit"Meaning?

TIA

Little update - I did the brake test in post #7 of the second linked thread and the RPMs did in fact jump @250 rpm. I stopped by my local (non dealer) shop this morning and scheduled a full flush and re-fluid for tomorrow. I am going to have them reset the code and see how it does. Given the fact that the brake test indicates it is working and that this is how the matter was resolved 30k ago I am hopeful.

Good luck

Your first link is to my post, to add more about my case.
The dealer in my area does no troubleshooting on transmission, so their answer was replace transmission. I believe in my case it was a a dirty contact in one of the electrical connections to the transmission. Contact cleaner on all of them, reset code, and it was good.
Now the case may be that it is some other intermittent issue that just needs a code reset and it goes away for a long time.
So do some low cost thing flush or contact cleaner, reset code and see if issue goes away.
Seems kind of odd a dealer would put Dextron in.

I had the rig's tranny flushed and the code reset. I just picked it up and drove it @20 miles in town (stop n go) - seems fine, more correctly stated - it seems the same as it has been (fine).

On the note of Dextron - my dipstick states "Dextron" on it for refills, does yours say something else?

Good luck

ETA - without bumping - so a week later / having put @ 400 miles on it including three trips up the Mts and off into the woods searching for a suitably remote camp site near water - no issues.

I was thinking it was some Toyota spec rather than Dextron, but it is Dextron for my 2000. Guess it is the later models when they removed ATF dipstick that have a Toyota spec fluid.

Update: 9/21/13 - no codes till yesterday.

Driving conditions yesterday and the time before we're the same - running up and down steep one lane FS gravel roads at speeds fast enough to make the VSC bell go off on @ 25% of the corners. Additionally since I was searching the finger roads that generally ended up being blocked off 1/4 mile up, the vehicle was hot and did lots of extra shifting.

I went to Napa the pulled the code and I cleared it. I have not had the light come back on and I have driven it several times.

My thinking is the mild thrashing is enough to heat things up (expansion?) and cause just enough of an issue that it trips the sensor. However once it cools down it works. I am not saying there isn't t a tranny killing problem brewing. However I am saying I have spent the summer taking it on weekend trips to The same type of FS roads with the family in the car (driving in a manner so as to nev cause concern by a passenger) and have not had any issues.

In short, I think my tranny is at a point where it doesn't like to be thrown around hard but it is still more resilient than initially thought.

Last thought I know some complain about the highway gearing of the trans, but for running up and down the hills in woods - they hit a winner.

Good luck

Have you continued to have this issue? I have been researching for a few weeks now and do not see a clear solution that has fixed this per mantle. I have seen several of the shift solenoid on eBay for under 100 bucks and have considered replacing it.

However I am hoping something else might work.

the first thing to do is replace your speed sensor... drivers side one 10mm bolt... most toyotas use the same part... only difference is the mounting bolt hole you can elongate the hole to make it work if you can't find the correct one local... on ebay about $20 for the correct part
