cnd 101 axlespring question? (1 Viewer)

Hello all,

I just started my new years resolution and started my m101 restoration.

Today I removed the axel and springs, i will be cleaning them up for repainting.

Along the way I notcied that the axle has a slight 1-2 degree bend.

Is this normal does the axle need to be replaced? If so is there a direct replacement?

Also take a look at the springs on looks to be out of true. They are compressed form the u bolts then bow apart fairly dramatically. Is this a issue do I need to replace the springs?

Please let me know what you guys think?

Have you towed with it yet? Did it act funny on the road? I would be suspect, but I don't know if that is something out of the ordinary or not. There are a lot of m101's here, I am sure someone will chime in soon.

I only towed it once without a load at low speeds with no issues.

Im not sure about your specific axle, but its not uncommon to put a couple degrees of negitive camber in the axle for tracking purposes. If it is bent in the center, with the outsides bending up that might be whats going on. usually its 4 to 6 degree bend. Giving each wheel 2 to 3 degrees. This all depends on the mounting angle of the spindel in relation to the axle. What ever it's worth?

I have a beater trailer with a welded mobile home axle underneath that has more 'bend' to it than yours. I've hauled it full (4x5x6') of firewood (almost a cord) on both the rugged forest road & then at 55 on pavement with no problem.

for the springs pull the packs apart and clean/paint and lube them . what your seeing is the crud inbetween the springs in the pack making them look that way .
as for the axle they do have a bend in them from when they were built but without getting a good look at your I cant tell if its more then normal .

my springs looked identical and so I took them apart completely and plan on sandblasting and repainting and put back together with all new grade 8 bolts.

I feel your pain! My springs were toast!!!! Severely rusted, some were arched the opposite direction, and...OH, did I mention RUSTY!!

Here's what I found: Suzuki Samurai FRONT springs are almost an exact length-match. It takes a little work (I'm still in the process) to get them to work but they look sweet.
