Anyone thinking of going to Cruise Moab 07? I'm trying to work it out with the boss to get out there and to vegas 12 day trip or so. It'll all depend on gas prices I guess. Right now it would cost about $900 to get the 80 out there. Roundtrip about 4000 miles.
Or who wants to tow my 40 out there and back and I'll fly and kick in for gas
Thinking about it...though highly doubtful. Unless an E85 conversion kit comes on the market and is government subsidized, I doubt I will be going anywhere west of the Miss. in a vehicle. A plane is a different story. Fly out and ride with some folks. Always plenty of open seats.
I agree...if I gotta go THAT far I'm taking my Cruiser and WHEELING! That said I'd LOVE to go but I have no idea if I'll have the means to do something like that right now. I think I'll be happy with making it to Paragon for CMCC next year in my own rig...
But if I DID go I'd be happy to work out a method to take both my truck and your's Marty. Big UHaul/Ryder and a trailer ought to do it...
From what I have seen, you need to know the owner operator to make this work at a reasonable price. Another problem is tall rigs don't fit well on the open haulers.
it is a chunk of change period. Then you add plane ticket and rent a car.
Knock yerselves out on the commercial hauler deal; I'm not interested. For me the journey is more than half the fun. I can't see chit if I'm at 25,000 feet in a plane. I wanna see the country when I travel to new places (I haven't been further west than St. Louis... ).
Vans also make great places to sleep at events. I sleep way better in the back of my cube van on a matress and box spring than in the tent on the ground! Easier to keep an eye on my rig if I'm travelling with it too. Plus spares ae easier to deal with. I usually get a couple folks that need something shipped to help cover the cost of my fuel while I move their stuff with a personal touch.
I would rather drive myself and I still might.
But....2 Kids, wife, vacation time blah blah makes flying sound nicer plus my 40 will be out there(right Nick?)

Not makin' ANY promises to anything of the sort! ;p I wish I could promise to drive a rig or two out but if I'm working a full time, clock punchin' job I doubt I'll be going at this point. I won't have enough time in to ask for vacation time yet AFAIK. Of course a regular paycheck might offset the pain of staying home for a little while...
Trying my best to make this happen....I have my wife convinced, but we were just offered a free vacation to Outer Banks with my parents. My wife doesn't wanna go and I don't either. But with 2 kids, free sounds good plus my mom is the babysitter.

Anyway I talked to my wife at lunch today....She doesn't wanna goto the outer banks and I would really rather go out west. I don't know how long she can stay away from the kids though. So she may fly in and fly out. I will most likely be bringing the 80 unless we are in a super sweeet caravan of 40s

The ride out in a 40 will be tough....maybe tough for most of us except probably for Nick who can handle anything--I'm convinced!
Tentatively, I'll say yeah I'm in, but we have to consider some serious logisitics:
1. Trailering 40's probably would be the best way to go considering we could go at least with the flow of traffic all the way out. It is about 1500 miles if not a bit more.
2. Gas $$$$$...For me to go out to Colorado and back was a little over $800 round trip. That's a lot of money just for gas. And May is the beginning of the driving season too...something to think about.
3. Drive out to Moab is at least 2 days straight without stopping to sleep or anything. That's with regular highway speeds. CM is 5 days in length, IIRC, another 2 days back, so we need at least ten days....can anyone get tendays off (those os us who are employed)?
Just some things to think about. Of course, the above is not including possible breakage, damage, etc.
My 40 does like 80
*If* I go I would leave tues/wed after work drive for 6 hours or so and head the rest of the way the next day. Wheel thursday(if I can), friday, saturday....Then camping and vegas throughout the next week.
If the 40 were drivable I would drive it and tow a trailer with wheeling tires and all the spares I thought I would need to get home. With the V8 it ran with traffic easily. Heck, I used to commute in Boston in the 40 with a 2F. It ran 70 all day long no problem. It would do 80 but I didn't enjoy the ride at those speeds.
At the same time I'd rather tow the 40 with the cube van so I don't have to fawk with a tent. Spares and tools fit better in the van too. 10 mpg sucks though.
I'm not committing to anything at this point. My life is FAR too unstable for that. But if I gotta truck, some cash and some time I might just go...
