I received a call from Allen L on 9/01/10.

The Buck Rock Foundation was going to host its 10th annual Independence Day Celebration and Open House at Buck Rock Lookout in the Giant Sequoia National Monument. The event was postponed due to heavy Snow.

Well, it is happening this weekend.

Sunday September 5th and it runs from 9:00am - 3:00pm.

They need assistance with telling people where to park and how to park. We can get 50 vehicles in the parking area since 6 of us did it last year. Without our assistance, 4 or 5 vehicles can choke the parking area up pretty good.

There is a lot going on this weekend but hopefully some of us can make it. Please post up if you can.

SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST The Buck Rock Foundation is hosting its 10th annual Open House at Buck Rock Lookout in the Giant Sequoia National Monument. The event, which will take place on Sunday, Sept 5th 2010 from 9:00am - 3:00pm, will be held at the base of the lookout.

The barbecue will be fired up with hotdogs and barbecue beef sandwiches with all the fixings, along with drinks and other goodies, for a small donation. Booths featuring local history and wildlife, children’s activities, merchandise, and lookout memorabilia will be on display. Smokey Bear is scheduled to appear throughout the day while fire watchers will be on hand to explain the workings of this active and historic fire lookout.

On the drive into Buck Rock, visitors will have the opportunity to first stop at the Big Meadows day use area (1/4 mile off the General’s Highway) to get Forest information and directions to the event. At this location, visitors will also find "The Fire Place", a mobile learning center. The trailer displays beautifully painted murals that illustrate the fire management program in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. There are a variety of exhibits and activities about fire history, ecology and management

Located in the Big Meadows area of the Sequoia National Forest in the cooler elevation of 8,500 feet, Buck Rock Lookout is a popular destination for people from all over the world. Perched 300 feet above the ground on a granite dome, visitors have grand views of the High Sierra Nevada Mountains featuring the Great Western Divide and surrounding beauty. Eagles, falcons and other magnificent birds of prey are often spotted soaring the skies around the lookout. After many years of being shuttered, Buck Rock reopened in 2000, and this annual celebration marks that event.

For more information contact the Buck Rock Foundation, 559-336-9319 or visit their website at Welcome To The Buck Rock Foundation.

So you going Dan? I've never been up there? If I get done sat thinking of going

Well the parking area is in three different areas. It would require at least three people to do it correctly using walkie talkies/ two way radios.

Last year we had 6 and it went really smooth.

The people who visit Buck Rock are mainly "townies" who do not know how to park on trails. They will park their vehicle in the middle of the trail/road or the enterance of the parking area for a few hours if they are allowed to.

It is extremely short notice but if we get three people together from the club, I can rearrange my schedule and should be able to make it. If nobody wants to support the Adopted Trail maybe we should drop it. (This comment is aimed at the USFS since they seem to do this last minute stuff each year.) Just a thought.

Really we have gone out of our way to support the USFS and they simple wont return emails and calls. Dont really know what their problem is but they dont seem to need our heklp unless it is at the last minute. I have also heard that the snowmobile and cross country club is having the same problems

Well I've put it out there before ? Maybe we should get ahold of the guy in Fresno/Clovis thAt put on ohv class? Maybe he can help push from the other side ? The 4x4 Him guys know him very well!

Its a completly different forest and district. The shaver lake area is in the sierra national forest and the buck rock is in the sequoia national forest. I know for a fact if we were in the sierra national forest this would not be a issue. I know Miguel has talked to the guy in sierra, but unless they are willing to put in the time and effort then there is nothing more we can do. I have spent countless hours and trip working on this and we have done everything on our end, but we physically can not do anyhing unless they allow us to. I sent emails and talked to Miguel about letting us know when the trail was going to open so we could get in and make sure it is clear and mark it. I didnt hear anything back from him and then I found out that the trail opened. This is just one example.

#\3 days notice is just not enough time to get a group together. I know that I could not get off. My brother is on vacation, my dad and i am sure Mike is getting ready for the rubicon next week. I am sure other people have already made plans. I would of been happy to help, but it was just to short of notice.
