Looking to some of the resident AZ experts for the closest - remote camping destination at the Grand Canyon. I read about Point Sublime and it appears to be 6 plus hours out. That may work if nothing closer is recommended. Just inquiring if something closer that you guys could point me to.

thanks in advance

chris

It seems like balancing "close" and "remote" will be a challenge for sure. I'm interested to see what comes out of this thread as well!

South Bass Trailhead. Get a BC permit in the park before headed out. And it may cost you $20 from the Hualapai tribe when you cross their land. It is about 3 hrs from Flag to your fire ring.

What about Havasu Point on the south side? I've never been.

When you're ready for a not-close but amazing spot, I highly recommend Toroweap/Tuweep on the north rim. It's about 8.5hrs from Phoenix because about 1.5-2 hrs is dirt/offroad-ish. Will need advance permit to camp. I first saw the Grand Canyon from this spot and then later went the typical route up through Williams and was highly unimpressed by the south rim in comparison.

Love Toroweap. When did they begin the permit system? Been over ten years since I was there.

Although, actually, I might add that 8.5hrs is what Google

Unsure when it began, but the Rangers were very attentive at ensuring all campers had permits.

And I guess I should add I think this was about 3 years ago.

Agree, North Rim is much more impressive if given the choice ~

Good stuff guys. I will check these places out. I've been to Toroweap a couple of years ago. Really awesome place.

Buck Farm Lookout, North and South Timp Point, Fire Point, Locust Point, Parissawampits Point: all excellent North Rim areas that are accessible. They are all free to camp at, but, probably not as close as Havasu Pt/South Bass TH that I mentioned above.

A side question: I've read lots of reports of flat tires on the road to Toroweap; but the articles never give specifics. Anyone know why?

I think because that road gets lots of non-offroaders and rental cars. Not trying to put folks down, but I really think it's a lack of experience and decent tires. That's a great road.

Always enjoyed your site man. It's great work.
Thanks man, that's always good to hear! Keeps me motivated to keep posting.
