Hi Folks!

This is my first post and of course it has a question in it.

I own a 1995 J7 LandCruiser Troopcarrier.

I have a clicking/grinding noise when turning left or right but only if 4WD enabled.
In 2WD there isn't anything to hear at all.
Sometimes it was pretty loud, Metal grinding/hammering against Metal that even people turned around to look what the heck is going on.
Hard to describe but i made an audio file if someone is interested (pretty good from 2:10 on). Speed is 5 km/h, i don't dare to drive faster than 15...

Not the very loud Type but good to hear (the very loud Version would be triple the noise).

It occurs when the steering wheel is turned like 50-80%, the noise stops when i am pulling the wheel to the edge or just drive straight.

I found out that it could be the CV Joints.
But is it also possible that my Locking Hubs/Bearings are kind off bad or sth. is not correct?

The reason i ask is:
Everything seemed fine until i went for a checkup, never heard that noise.
Besides something else they said wheel bearings are loose and need servicing.
I then had a guy tighten them.
Thats when it started (or at least recognised it).

Despite CV Joints, could it be sth. regarding the wheel bearings only ?
Maybe they are too tight or something went wrong putting back the Hub together like it is not a 100% locking anymore?

I don't have two left hands but this is all new to to me so i hope it is not kind of a dumb question.
If i would have found a How2 with pictures on how to check the Hubs i might have given it a try myself.

Hi 89GASHOG!
Ok i am convinced :)

It is just so strange.
The Inspection brought up nothing about the Joints.
Then after tightening the Bearings and about 20km of
driving through soft Sand they are worn out.

Went to a mechanic (mainly for some other stuff) he said one is bad but not too bad, has met worse.
He said this will cost quite much as it needs some time to put everything apart.

So now i am asking myself what will actually happen
if one Joint fails during Offroad driving?
Will i have a three wheel drive then at least ? :)

Is there something like a test so i know when i really need to change them ?
The clicking noise itself occours only when around 50% of turning the wheels, not at 100%.

I only use 4x4 when i really need it, meaning (soft) Sand or Mud but of course then i kind of depend on 4x4...

Money Money Money :(

Most likely to be cv joint worn out. You could hear it from which side does the sound came out when turning in 4wd.

If one cv joint fails, you willl have two wheel drive not three. because it needs both side to work to lock together.

Thx for the Info Mate!

I think it is the right one, but i am not really sure (i'm bad when it comes to those things, should get another Person on the Passenger Seat).
Unfortunately no money for changing them, maybe i come across a whole inner axle which
even i might be able change....

Hi Mate!
Thx for the (not very good) Info.
Besides not knowing what i would have to do in that case i indeed drive around only with the most essential tools so that at least i can fix things i am able to.
I know now that the right CV Joint is making the noise and i already bought a new one.
All Mechanics i met so far (3 in total) said that it doesn't sound bad at all and i am fine and shouldnt worry about
.
Anyway i feel more comfortable getting it fixed, now i only have to find the "right" place for it :)

But unlucky as i am with the car at the moment i broke one of those leaf spring clips on each front side which hold them together, and the rear clips on those leave springs are pretty loose so i can hear them squeaking when doing sharp turns...
I have not done any research yet if there is an easy fix for it (like just getting two thick metal plates and screwing them together) or if i need at least one new leave spring where those clip is bolted to....
Oh and just two days ago i ran over sth small while driving along a pretty good dirt road that destroyed my rear tyre and even damaged a part in the wheel case...well at least that i can fix :)
