So I replaced my birfield joints thinking the click was from there. and I still get that noise. it seems like it is worse after driving on the highway with speed. It is like the transmission is binding up but it will do it in when coasting. any thoughts on how I should check. it will make the noise when in gear or coasting. I do have larger tires.

rear axle? rear Diff? bearing?

thanks

Could be the idler bearings in the transfercase and also the output bearing to the rear drive shaft. You can check the output bearing for smoothness . Undo the drive shaft, put transfer case in N 2wd.. and spin it.... Sometimes they get that bad you can wiggle it.

I have had slippery diffs that click normally the fix is change oil. It could also be one the uni joints clicking. These old trucks have a habit of blowing the seal between gearbox and transfer. The transfer oil ends up overfilling the gearbox and the transfer runs empty. To check pull the gearbox filler plug and see if it overfilled. It could have 3 litres so use a good size bucket when checking.
