Was about to go on a date to our favorite pizza and beverage pub Saturday night in the troopy, but apparently it had other plans. The previous weekend when I went to start it, turned the key and heard "click, click." Turn off, remove & replace the key...started right up. Saturday night it repeated the click, click; but sadly no turn over when I removed & reinstalled the key. My guess...starter. :hhmm:

Anyone have a spare 1HZ starter lying around?

Otherwise I don't think I will make the cruiser show in 2 weeks without either the hit the starter method or a pull pop the clutch start...

Have you researched to see if the plunger and contacts are those used on other toyota starters. You might be surprised to find that the contacts are a multi-application usage. Very easy to replace.

Edit: I may stand corrected did a quick EPC search and it doesn't look like your starter has a plunger system. Parts are listed so you might want to check Specter and see if they don't have one.

i had a similar problem with a Grand Cherokee several years back. it was a dying starter. This happened periodically for a couple months before it finally ate it.

Edit: The hit the starter method did the trick almost every time.

Yep, I had a starter do the same, and the hitting it with a section of pipe worked until I could get a new one.

You can always take the starter to a good auto electrical place and have them rebuild it. Not sure if the price would be equivalent to a new one or not....

Just had mine rebuilt for the HJ at millers awhile back for 110 now no

Forrest, Where is this Miller's place you speak of? Would you recommend them to rebuild my starter?

BTW we are practically neighbors now. I purchased a farm 1 exit north on 85 of Belmont-sam wilson rd and backside of USNWC. We should get together some time.

Millers is on second ave in Gastonia they do really good work

Hate to question anyones intelligence, but double check the battery tterminals. Cant hurt and only takes a second...

Very good point Ryan. You can check the voltage at the starter (to chassis ground) and make sure you aren't getting too much drop in the battery - starter connection. Could be the battery connection to +12 or a poor ground, or a bad cable as well.

I agree with checking the power and ground lines and contacts. By far the biggest one cause for electrical issues I have had in Toyota vehicles is bad grounds.

Electrical problems="Ghosts in the machine" :)

That is why i build my own battery / ground cables for all my cruisers.
