i live in the land of 100F. Is a truck that spent most of its life in Schaumburg, IL., and the rest of its life north of New Orleans going to be a rust risk? I'd have to travel to inspect it.

2004 with around 50k miles.

Thought?

EDIT - corrected location

I bought a 2004 with 92k on it last year from Michigan. It had some surface rust underneath, but nothing serious...and no body rust at all.

I wouldn't be scared of the truck, but I'd ask for lots of undercarriage pics before you make the trip.

Good luck.

It's hit or miss really. I looked at probably 10 rigs in northern ohio, indiana and illinois. Most were absolutely horrid. Looked like they had been dipped in rust. Majority of the time they had good service history and great exterior but my gosh, when I started looking underneath it was really bad.

With that being said it's possible to find a truck with minimal rust from the rust belt. I found one with what I'd consider average rust but I still cuss the thing out every time I'm underneath it working on something.

I flew out to Cleveland to purchase an LX in early July, you can check out the thread I started. Seller clearly misrepresented the car, on top of that the car had clearly sat for a long time and Clevland is on top of one of the biggest salt mines. I sucked it up and flew home and that sucked. Luckily I found a car with less than half the mileage that had been babied in Texas for not much more. Stick it out and wait man, it'll pay dividends. Especially if you're going to work on the 100 yourself.

What are you looking for ? Debating selling my rig to jump to a 200.....happy to deliver...

Yes it will likely be rusty, especially underneath. I grew up in the Chicago area, and I have even seen the most babied "summer" cars with some rust underneath.

A LC would definitely be a rig called upon for driving in the snow, and less likely to be garaged in winter as say, a Corvette would be. I would avoid a Northern car.

Mine has spent its entire life in Cleveland and is completely rust-free. OK that is a huge lie. Mine looks like it has been bathed in acid and sprayed with salt water every day for 15 years.
I would look for something a little less salted.
