Cleaning up a mini truck PS gear box

I'm slowly accumulating the parts for a mini-truck PS conversion. I got a gear box that I would like to clean up a bit. The picture makes it look less grimey than it actually is. Sandblasting would be nice, but I don't want to risk getting sand inside. Any suggestions welcome.

Parts washer or just dish soap and a scrub brush.

yup, elbow grease is where its at.

Simple Green from Home Depot. Spray, scrub with old toothbrushes or old scrub brushes, rinse with hose. Works great.

Then wire brush the rust, primer, then paint.
