Hey guys

I know I have seen a thread on this and I just can't seem to find it... I have tons of rust in my fuel tank that is clogging up everything. I have been going through a fuel filter daily and need some advice on how to clean her out. I know that there are a few options but I wanted to hear from some peeps who have first hand experience. I also was curious if there was some sort of sealer I can coat the inside with that will help in the future. Thanks

i used muratic (sp) acid to clean my tank. about a 50/50 mix of water and acid and let sit for several hours and drain and check tank to see how it looks and repeat if needed. then i neutralized it with baking soda and rinsed it out several times. then get POR-15's tank sealer kit and follow the direction in the kit. very easy to do and i havent had a problem in about 5 years with rust in the tank.

and if you want you can go a little stronger on the acid but don't freak if you see smoke coming out of the tank (LOL) oh and if i remember correctly you want to add acid to the water not water to acid. some one should chime in if i am wrong, its been a while.

Once its done you may also want to take a look at your fuel lines, fuel pump and carb condition. They also may need some attention.

The rust in my old tank wound up in the fuel lines, fuel pump and carb. The PO of my 40 wasn't careful about fuel filters and the whole fuel system was neglected. After getting a new OEM tank I ended up rebuilding my carb (because it was full of red/brown gunk), replacing the fuel pump (also had gunk and a cracking diaphragm), cleaning out the hard fuel line (coated withe red/brown inside) and getting new soft fuel lines.

Good luck. Hope it wasn't as bad as mine.

Take it to a local radiator shop. Mine charged me $69, clean and line, 1 week turnaround. I've done it myself and it sucks, not to mention you've got some serious waste to get rid of. You've got to take the tank out to do it right. Like sandblasting, it's just one of those jobs thats not worth it to DIY. ;)

Hey I just saw a kit at Napa for cleaning/de rusting and sealing fuel tanks. Also, I'll bring over my glass fuel filter for you so you can open it up and clean it if you need to.
Cruiser night on Wednesday I should have mine running!

Thanks guys and cool thanks Isaac, I'll check on that napa thing tomarrow.
