I met a real nice guy today that brought in his 96 80 series. He bought it from his father, who lives in Utah near Moab, who just got a 100 series and modded it up. The 80 has a 4" Ome, Arb front, Slee rear, Slee arms and...

A Safari Turbo set up! Ive never seen one in person and it is a nice set up. It involves a complete diff manifold and 3" exhaust all the way back. The tiny free flow cat converter that replaced the stock units was thowing a under threshold cat code.

On the drive to the back lot the turbo wind up sounds impressive and you can tell it throws some power to the wheels. There is substantial turbo lag as one might guess but the horsepower payoff is there when the revs come up. Comparing it to the supercharger, the SC delivers along the entire range and is much better on the bottom end but doesnt compete up top. Interesting and pretty cool!

I told him about CSC and Mud. He was excited about finding other "like-minded" people and wanted to learn about new trails. (Thats Almost scary ):grinpimp:

When Kevin and I were playing with desert racing cars, we shied away from turbos. They do have the ability to boost power a lot, especially at the higher RPMs. But they have a downside.
A turbo has to run at 20,000 RPMs to begin to be effective. In a dusty environment, this is a problem. There were very few turbos that could withstand 500 miles of constant high-RPM use in a dusty environment without simulating a fragmentation grenade!
Dominating the race for 498 miles means nothing if your engine fragments 2 miles before the finish line! Turbos and dusty conditions do not mix well. The best air filters will not change this.
If you need a faster truck, Ford and Chevy sell them. If you need a real rig, stay with your slow Toyota 6-cylinder! Get over it!

Not really.
