My wife is threatening me with personals if I do Black Bear Pass. Then, I get a call from her as this is her first time back in ABQ since moving to Durango 8 months ago. She is in rush hour traffic with cars everywhere.

The first thing she says on the phone: "I am ready for Black Bear Pass". Obviously, I translate this to "we are going to to Black Bear".:steer:

Wooohoooo, right on. Black Bear pass is way over hyped and it's a nice trail when it's dry. Technically, 100 yards of it deserves the reputation that it has, the rest of it is like any other mild mannered, easy going dirt trail.

Black is mostly just a mental challenge. But try to do it when it's not raining. Rain can make a few spots much more scary.

Every time I do Black Bear I vow to never do it again. It scares the hell out of me.
But Ali and Marc are correct.... it's not technically challenging.... just mentally so.
You just have to pay attention.

I was passenger for black bear once, I got out to "take pictures" really, I thought the 80 was going to plummet, but I am from Alabama. We dont have stuff like that here.

Go for it. It's not hard. Just pay attention. If you leave early, shoot back over on Imogene. If you leave later, go back on Ophir.

My record: 550 to the Waterfall - 45min
