Would like to have one or two extras for the Runner, P.O. left no tag with them.
Dealer? Or (Have a Locksmith bud)?
PM if this is Taboo.

I would contact murf. I was looking for another key when I got my 4Runner. Talking with murf if it has a chip it more expensive to do. Think is going to be a dealer thing. As I remember if the remote you currently have is a master it's not a problem to program another remote. If it is I would get a couple and keep the master somewhere safe. Without a master believe the ECU needs to be replaced. At least that's the way it is on the 100 series LC I had. I would do a online search you may be able to program it yourself. Believe the key is if you still have a master remote.

My 4Runner doesn't have chipped key but has the Toyota VIP security. That has turned out to be a pain. Had a couple of keys made and bought a remote of eBay. My problem is I can't get the 4Runner to go into program mode. Instructions from the seller are the same as I found on line. When I sent a message to the seller the solution was to mail me a second remote.:bang: I now have two remotes just can't get them program. I know the VIP is working. While I was replacing the one of the front CV axles I must have push the lock button while the remote was in my pocket. I wanted something out of the backseat. Since it was in the garage I had the windows down. I just reached in and unlocked the door. Alarm started going off. Put the key in the ignition and turn it on. Alarm is going. Wasn't until I used the remote to unlock the doors did it stop.:bang: Not sure if something special has to be done to get it into program since it's clear the VIP is tied into the remote power locks. Have cruisers over fifty five years old my 99 4Runner is new modern vehicle to me but I guess when your working on new vehicles a 99 is old.:meh: Haven't been able to find anyone who can answer my question on how to get it in program mode. Also trying to find out where the ECU is on a 98. While mine is a 99 it was built in 8/98. 98 models require you push a button on the ECU to get it into program mode. 99 it's a process of turning the key on and off, lock and unlock the doors, open and close the driver's, get out walk around the vehicle twice, kick each tire once and then bang on your head on the hood. My wife and I have tried it a number of times and only end up with a sore foot and headache.

Some ACE Hardware locations have the chipped key programming machines if you have an existing key for it to read the code from. I got one for my son's Pathfinder at 19th Ave and Bell. When I tried to go the Nissan dealer route it was a multi-step process, order the key (not cheap), then pay an hours time for some tech to program it when it comes in (also not cheap).

Murf is always my first call when it comes to all things Toyota though.

John, call around some of the experienced locksmiths in your neck of the woods. Some are able to do it from what I hear without going to the dealer?
