Hi everyone,
I need to have a chimney liner installed in my home for my hot water baseboard oil fired boiler. At this point the clay tile interior of the chimney has started to crumble and fail. I had a reputable chimney company come out to look at the job and give me an estimate. They confirmed that the clay is falling apart, and they also noted that since the chimney runs up through the house to the roof, it is a safety hazard at this point. He said that since the clay is not totally intact, carbon monoxide can seep into the house through the block of the chimney. He stated that we NEED to do a liner ASAP. I trust the company that we called, and I don't believe they are simply looking for work.
So here is the dilemma...should I use a 6 or 7 inch liner? According to the chimney guy, if I do a 7 inch liner, he would need to break away the tile liner totally for the new liner to fit.....$300 extra. If I do a 6 inch liner, it would not be necessary to break up the tile so it would be $300.00 less. The boiler is from 1992 and he said older boilers usually had larger diameter pipes, but he said that a 6 inch liner "should" be fine. He said ask the oil boiler repairman his opinion...I did and the oil guy said "sure...no problem with a 6". He said something about BTU's of boiler dictate the flue diameter so 6 is fine. He was rather quick with is answer, so I figured I would ask the collective knowledge of Mud.
