My check engine light has been coming on sporadically on my '88. Had a good mechanic friend of mine look at possible head gasket problems.

Not the case, says maybe it could be the O2 sensors.

The beast leaks like a sive, oil tranny fluid. Does anyone think this is right?

If it is an FJ-62, you can run a diagnostic and watch the pattern that the CEL (check engine light) blinks and determine what code it is throwing, if any at all. You need to short out pins Te1 and E1 inside the "Diagnostic" box located on the passenger side firewall near where the wireing harness goes through the firewall, with the car off. Then turn the key to the accessory position and watch the CEL. If it blinks in a continuous pattern ever second or so then everything is ok. But if it blinks for a series up to 7 or 8 times then pauses then blinks for another series, then pauses and if it repeats the same number of blinks as the first series followed by the same series that came second the first time, then there is only one code (and it is the first number of times the CEL blinked followed by the second number indicating a 2 digit code corresponding to descriptions in the FSM). If the second series of blinks is not the same as the first two, there is another code. Follow the patterns until they repeat then you know that was the last one.

If you do a search you will probably find a better description, or definitions of the codes. Good luck
