This is no lie; this morning on my way to work I was thinking how good my '00 100 runs for haveing 106k on it, & within 30 seconds my check engine light started flashing. Truck felt like it had no power. Light went out for 30 seconds & came back on again, still flashing. I drove to the train station and let it run while I was waiting. Got out to check the gas cap & could hear the truck stumbling a little, through the tailpipe & it kinda smelled, not like sulpher though. Gas cap was ok.

3/4 tank of gas, no work done on truck for 4 mos.

Still stumbleing & light comes back on even after I shut it off for 2-3 mins.

Had a similar issue 3 mos ago & dealer said it turned out to be 2 coil packs. They had just done $2k of service & replaced the two packs for nothing.

Any thoughts & what it may cost?

Merry Christmas!

Yea, I'll have my local mech check it out, rather than run to Toyota

Disconnect battery, let it sit for a while. Then (assuming CEL comes back on) drive to "any" auto parts store and borrow (free) a OBD reader.

well, got in the car tonight to drive it to the local shop & no light on for the first minute or so, stumbling a little, then CEL came on, then traction & stability lights came on.

What's up with this? Last time I had a coil I only got the CEL.

Spoke to shop this morning, looks like 2 bads coils, they are on their way, non Toyota, as local dealers were out of stock. He thought aftermarket may be better than OEM. I wonder about that??

So that's 4 coils in last 6 months. Should I just replace the others a few at a time & keep old ones as spares.

Looks like an really easy job when you are in your driveway & then you don't have to do any diagnosis. Of course the one you didn't replace would prob die shortly thereafter!

Final result - replaced 2 coils, cleared codes, read 1 more coil intermittent, computer says which cyls are missfiring, so replaced that one to.

Sum total $450. $105/coil for Standard

Will prob do another coil next month for preventive maint.

Merry Christmas to me says my wife.

This is not a fun toy!

You should think about how you never won powerball, who knows, you may be surprised again.

i may have the same problem

This sounds almost exactly like my truck started behaving over the weekend. Waiting to see what codes I get back as well since I dropped mine off this morning. I have a 99 Cruiser with 109K miles and no problems until this past weekend... Suck before Xmas... How many coils are there to replace? The local import guys told me the coil problem was common in landcruisers before i read this post...

Usually only one coil goes bad and the other cylinder gets a sympathetic code because the sensors are that sensitive.

What brand after market coil did they use? Haven't heard of anyone else using them.

Coil pack links

Sure enough coil on cylinder one bad which is what i thought prior to the diagnosis... Is there any way to tell which coil is bad without a scan tool or taking to shop to get the computer code back? I'm just trying to determine if I could have done the labor myself and just bought the $100 part...

Yes - swap the suspect coil to the opposite bank and fire it up. If the code reader hits on the new cylinder than you have identified your bad coil.

Check Engine Light

My Landcruiser Guru, Gary Kardum @ Mudracks in Sonoma, CA told me to first check to see if the GAS CAP is on tightly...

just happend to me on my '93 FZJ 80....a quick twist of the cap is all it took to correct (turn off) the light...everything else seems perfectly normal.

Thank you, Gary;p

Yeah, according to my local stealership 80% of all CELs are set off by a loose or faulty gas cap. That's a high percentage!
Tighten always til you hear 3 or 4 clicks.
My '99 cleared its code immediately.
A new cap seems the fastest fix-it 1st option if you're not able to get your hands on a scanner.
