Let me start off with saying my wife isn't the best driver. I get a call that she just hit a sign and busted the driverside mirror. Im thinking great, let me check car-parts for some used parts. 5 minutes later she gets home and asks if I can come outside and fix her mudflap. Im thinking wtf? I thought you said mirror? Well she says its the mudflap too. I walk outside and see the mudflap and bumper molding holding on for dear life, the mirror busted with glass missing, and the whole running board smashed in from front to back. Apparently the dog vomited in the car on her and she ran off the road and hit some sh!t but only saw the mirror as a problem.

I fixed everything except for the running boards. Now that shes scrapped her leg a couple times and caught her pants on the mangled mess a few times she wants me to fix this now.

So here I am, looking for some cheap options for bolt-on powdercoated sliders for the wife's GX470. I would prefer something with tread on top for her and the kids to get in the truck easier. Best price I've found so far is from shrockworks $730 with powdercoat and dimpled tread plate. Anybody seen a better price?

If you don't off road, just get cheap take off foot step/running board from 03-21 4Runner. They bolt to the same bolt holes under side sill.

I use N-Fab side step from 5th gen 4runner on my GX470 for a few months before I got my real slider.

Well I would but they would just get destroyed like the factory running boards when she hits the next thing in her path.

I think you'd still come out way ahead if you're not looking for off road functionality. I found some 2015 take offs for $40 with a quick search on CL. At that rate, you can swap them out 10 times before you'd get close to the cost of a set of real sliders. If she's going to run into stuff frequently, then you'll probably see the truck totaled before you make your money back on the sliders. In any event, you'll want to try to salvage the top of the factory steps if possible. Find a post about removing factory steps and follow along.

Knock on wood she hasnt totaled the thing yet. However, she has backed it up and smacked a stump. Luckily it only hit inside the wheel well (it defies all odds) and I could only find a piece of the trim loosened. Had she hit the running board it could have gotten up into the doors and I would really be out some money. Shes also backed into a pole and broke the tail light and backed into my bumper on my 3rd gen 4runner but only managed a small dent on the rear door with a little paint removed. Everything has been fender benders so far knock on wood again.

I live in a small city in Alabama. Craigslist here and even Atlanta and Birmingham are not showing any factory running boards especially in the color I need. I thought I could find some take-offs from people getting sliders but like you said the top of the factory running boards are cut off. Im stuck between paying $350 for nerf steps, $599 for bare metal sliders, or $730 for the most protection and convenience I can expect from a slider.

Yeah. Not that much available in your area. I think the key is to look for generic 4th/5th gen 4runner boards. Those should use the same attachment location. Some basic 4runner steps should be available for under $200 shipped. Anything for the gx is going to be more expensive.

Sliders are one of those things that when I started wheeling they were cheap and now they've double and tripled in price. I'll just make my own when the time comes. I prefer square tubing anyways.

That would have been a great option if the mounts were in the right place. I dont care if they are a little short.

If somebody sold the mounts I could put the rest together. WhiteKnuckle uses a U-bolt mount design. If I could just get the the legs and u-bolts that would get me started.

Will the 4th/5th generation 4Runner side steps fit a GX460? Looking at getting the AMP electric side steps but they don’t seem to exist for the GX 460. Any input would be appreciated!

The 5th Gen ones will bolt up to a 470 as well? I knew/assumed the 4th Gen ones would, but didn't realize the 5th gens lined up correctly as well.
