So I saw these pics on Spann's FB page. According to the description, taken by folks stranded up there.

I imagine that Skyway Motorway looks similar. Since we've all enjoyed riding out at Skyway at one time or another, what would you folks think about doing some cleanup out there? Maybe take a couple trucks (Preferably with a winch), saws, 4-6 guys, straps, and just go as far as we could in a day clearing the trail?

I'm sure we'd need to coordinate with the Forest Service, but I'd be interested in doing that as a club activity.

I'd be down. I don't have a winch.

depending on the date I'll go. things are starting to get busy around here on the weekends.

I drove up cheaha Wednesday night. It wasn't that bad. Just a bunch of trees down from ice and a few powerlines. Roads weren't slick at all. I don't know why they were "stranded" up there.

This happening tomorrow?

I've called up there a few times trying to get a ranger to see if there's any official channel we need to go through. Will keep everyone posted on what I find out. Cheaha park wasn't the correct entity, so I called the forest service and got a ranger station voicemail, left one with a guy there.

News says the park is closed until next week...
BTW, there is MEGA red tape with these clean-ups. So even if you do get someone, I hope they allow us.

Yeah. I figured there would be. I'm going to keep on it like Andy Dufresne in Shawshank... but it's going to be a phone call a day.

Let us know when you get about 36" from the end of the pipe.

Ok, forward progress down the pipe!

Talked to someone with the natn'l forest today. You have to take a 2 day certification course to use a chainsaw in the forest. They don't have one immediately available, but I'm on the notification list for the next one they hold. At a minimum, I'd like for some of us to go take that when they hold one. I think that'd be a good "tool in our belt" to be able to respond to future events out there.

Also, they have the ability to adopt portions of the OHV areas. She's going to email me and put me in touch with the woman who does the OHV road adoption.

Will continue to keep folks posted on what I hear.

Yep. I remember something like that once before when trying to help with Tellico years ago.

Maybe that could get us greater access to sections and roads that are less accessible to most.......Hmmm....

If there's a road, we have access to it.During access times. Some roads are closed during hunting season, but otherwise... access.
Are there roads that some people do not have access to? Like a hidden forum?

I just know there are a lot of locked gates up there. Have been every time I have been up there since I was a kid hunting with my dad.

If you go during hunting season, there will be a lot. Most National Forests have many roads closed during hunting season. Summer, though, they open up.

I thought it was the other way 'round. Opened during season. I may be wrong though.

no. They close them FOR hunting. Don't want folks out there driving in the same woods you firing in...
This ain't Memphis city.

Nope gates open during hunting season... At least in Talladega.
Roughly October to April
