I just installed a 5 speed in my 1984 FJ60. (Thanks Eric B.) Everything went fine, until I realized that the shifter I got was for a right hand drive. My 4 speed shifter fits in, but it does not shift very smoothly. The 5 speed has a full "ball" on the end and the 4 speed shifter is shaped like a ball, but the sides are cut off. A welder told Eric B that he was not comfortable cutting and re-welding the 5 speed shifter at the proper angle. Has anyone ever done this? Can it be bent? (cold or heated) Does anyone have a shifter? I will be at the Razorback Ramble next week, but I would like to get it done before we head out.

I can't believe a vise and propane torch couldn't help you get that right where you want it.

I usually just heat them and bend them myself unless i have to lengthen them then i cut them, and weld the extension in.
