I have my front hubs apart and need to change the rotors. Looks like there are two bolts holding the rotor to the hub. Once these are out the two should seperate. How do I remove the wheel studs? Or do I need to press new ones into the new rotor? Or am I missing something? Anyone done this?
Pound studs out with hammer (use a brass drift if you want to reuse your studs - not recommended). After this, the rotor should separate from the hub if you also removed the two bolts. Install is the reverse.
Jim-you can pound the studs out easily with a hammer. If you put a wheel nut on the stud loosly you can pound them out without damaging the threads. I would(and did) throw the old ones in the parts box, and buy a nice set of new ones from Toyota. The aftermarket ones are OK but the Toyota ones fit with less persuasion. I've replaced 4 of these rotors in the last few months on 2 trucks and I highly reccomend new Toyota wheel studs versus the aftermarket ones. Of course, with new studs, re-torque your wheels after a week or so.
I have to go in to Toyota today to pick up a couple of snap rings. When I took the drive shaft / birfield out, the shaft came away from the birfield as the inner snap ring was missing. That's another story.
I'll order the new studs and I think, by the looks of it, I will also need 2x hub oil seals (?)
I gave the studs / bolts a spray of penetrating oil before work so hopefully they will come out OK.
