My dad has a Homelite from the 60's that's been sitting in the shed forever. I'm 37 and I've never seen it run. We may be buying a house with a few trees I'll want to take out and I'm sure dad will give me the saw. Any chance parts are still available for it?
 
If the old Homelite is complete, it probably just needs a fuel line and a carburetor kit and the points cleaned.

Old Blue homelites were kinda hard to kill unless you put to lean of fuel mix in them. In the 60's, they used 16:1 fuel mix. Some units had oil-light (sp) bearings and they just need a lot of lube on them.
 
That's was I was thinking when I typed it. Star Wars! The Force is stong in this one.
Dan your good, the fuel line melted off. It was gummy and every time I tried to attach the filter the line would continue to split up the middle. So I bougth new line. Like I said, it no start.
The last time I ran it was about 8 or 9 months ago.

If your fuel lines rotted, generally your carburetor has to come off. The metering diaphragm and the pump diaphragm are generally made of the same type of material as the fuel line (Viton). The diaphragms are probably stiff and the inlet needle is stuck as well.
 
Thanks Dan I'll order and new diaphragm and check the needle. I don't know what needle your talking about but I'll take the carb a part. But before I do....is it easy to put back together? Or will I make matter worse? I'm not much of a mechanic when it come to those things.

Its killer to see your input, and help on the sthil equipment. I have been having fits with the "new" fuel.

In the past when I would just buy Chevron 89 or 92 octane. However in the last year or so, they have started adding ethonal.

In the past I didn't worry about leaving gas in the weedeater, or leaf blower or saw. I had a FS80 (or85) I can't remember, a BG55 and a 310 saw.

First I had a problem with the carb on the FS80, it was like 10 years old, I had never had any problems for the first 10 years. Then alst summer it wouldn't rev up. It would start and idle (wouldn't rev up). Anyway I figured it was time for a new one, (10 years and all) So I unloaded it on CL for parts for 30.00 (whoops)

Anyway, I had the same issue with the leaf blower, the service guy was back logged 3 months. Then my ever reliable 310.

I used it after a big wind storm, poached a real nice cord of fir. Next day it would idle but not rev up. So I said screw it and pulled the carb apart. It seemed to be gummed up inside, I totally disassemble the thing ran some carb and choke cleaner through it reassemblled. It san a little better so I tried it again, and was much more careful the second time. Taking care to blow out the main 'jet" and all the little passages. It runs like new, well with that sucess. I went ahead and tore down the leaf blower carb. And, was able to repair that to.

Anyway, it was killer to have some success, ( I was pretty irritaed with myself, for ruining my tools. However I the past I had not had any problems. Leaving fuel in them, I have two acres, and use my tools all the time. Perhaps they sit idle for 2 weeks at the most)

I am lookin at buying a new little saw, I like the 200 model, however I will probally wimp out and buy the similar saw thats like 350.00
 
Cool, I don't understand anything about them. However in my frustratuion I doned my gloves and safety glasses , assumed that any little passage on the body of the carb should have something coming of it. If something was sprayed in the other side.

Once I had carb cleaner coming out all the passages, I reassembled the thing and it worked. I was able to reuse the gaskets.

The way I look at yard tools is they are dispoable. My FS80 lasted 10 years so it cost me 30.00 a year. In my oponion that was the lifetime of the tool. (I realize now that, I was wrong) However I learned a lesson that. In my attempt to DIY repair I used ether (starting fluid) and the piston became scored on the exast side. (It was not scored prior to the ether use, I checked)

Now with what I would call limited success, I am stoked, I had planned on spending 50.00 on a new carb for the leaf blower. Funny one shop in town wants 85.00 for it the other 56.00. (ODD, same part number and all)

Anyway the new saw, I will be buying is the MS192 (its like 320.00) I have an old keep pullllin small saw.

I will be posting a new oil tank repair question here soon.
 
028 Won't run

After a good cleaning I ran my Stihl 028 through a tank of gas. Ran fine and cut fine. When I refilled again it will only run on choke but bogs and quits when I push the button up for the usual running position. Another carb problem or do I need to pull it apart to check that possible fuel line breakage that has been mentioned??? TIA, Dave
 
Will check that out Dan....I'm having a brain fart all of a sudden thinking I have the 026 (16"bar)....probably same configuration and given my description your suggestion sounds right. Stopped up and no gas to the carb. Many thanks, Dave


<Edit> I do have the 026-Cleaned out the tank, swished with alcohol, and flushed with fresh mix. Must have been the filter. Runs fine but got to do something about my muffler. Female threads are worn out so I can't keep a muffler on it and its killing my ears!

Look like Eucalyptus camaldulensis or microtheca, IIRC the wood checks badly.

Wow! they grow them big in Cali..

Need to get that guy a real shirt.;)

The guy Kip is a super nice guy. He was the speed climbing champion a few years back. He was there putting on a climbing seminar. He has sponsors. If I would ahve payed $5k plus his expenses, he would have been wearing a STIHL shirt. :meh:

What were you dropping trees for? Where was this @?

I was at Calatina Island in a Private Bay/Harbour. It was at Emerald Bay Boy Scout Camp.

Many of the trees were very sick with fungas or rot or they were to big for their environment. Many were leaning over buildings or were the scouts tents were set up. Unsafe for the kids.

Had a great time. When the big one hit the ground, you could feel the ground shake 1/2 mile away.

The only thing better n that would be standin uphill 1/4 mile away when they use explosives on a tree that big... :eek: Snag fire in a wilderness watershed. They flew in 3 "C" fallers & nobody would touch it...

I can't seem to find any cylinders and pistons for my Husky 266se besides the OEM ones. The rest of the saw was in pretty good shape, but I have a hard time justifying dropping $400 in OEM parts on a saw that old. I know your a Stihl guy, but is a 266 worth the $$$ to fix it? Bailey's basically said there isn't any aftermarket cylinders for the 266 so a $100 kit isn't available. If I decide to buy new, What Stihl would you recomend for a guy hanging out at 5-6k feet? I loved having the bar longer than 20" as well.
