Looking to buy a chain hoist. Going to install it in my red beam garage. Center of beam to the floor is 16 feet. Going to be lifting small boats to car engines. Can someone recommend a brand, length and tonage? I didn't know there were so many to choose from.

I have an old 1 ton Milwaukee. Lifts a 2F like a dream. If I did it again I would go one size larger.

We have a 1ton Budgit on an aluminum gantry in the research lab I work/do research in.

Use it to lift a lot of heavy electromagnetic rail gun parts. (no not kidding).

Works fine.

If it was for my shop, I would want a 2 ton so lifting the front end of a fully loaded 80 or 1-ton diesel truck wouldn't be out of the question.

What brand or are they all the same? should I get one that has a 15 foot chain? The beam to the floor is about 16 feet.

I personally prefer the Kito brand without exception, although the Columbus McKinnon stuff is also well built. I've used them for over 8 years for everything from overhead rigging to horizontal pulling. If you're looking for a motorized version, then I prefer the Columbus McKinnon ones.

Budgit is a brand. Been using it for 5 years. Works fine, sometimes takes a little tug to start lowering with a heavy load.

Aside from that, I can't comment on brand, and I don't have much experience with any other brand.
