CB or HAM stuff??

I just picked up a Cobra 148gtl pretty cheap and the guy threw in some other stuff. The first one is a Silver Streak 150. It looks like its an amp for CB. Does anyone know what it does and how to use it?

The second is a Texas Star DX 250 with switches for power, rec amp,am and ssb. I think this is a ham thing.

I will do some searching for specs for these but I want to see if anyone out there has used these and can give me some more insight to these.

They do not sound like any ham gear that I have heard of in the past. They sound like RF amplifiers. Do they have SO-239 (antenna) sockets on them? If so, they are used to boost your power. Kinda useless on CB. When used, many more people will hear you, but you won't be able to hear them unless they are running an amp, too. (Many other factors come into play but that is the one that will hang you up the most),

I am not a ham yet but I am looking into it. I have to look up the frequency for ham stuff but this one is for 28.0 MHz - 29.7 MHz

No info for the Silver Streak 150 yet. It does look like it was used with the CB though. The power for it si spliced with the power plug for the cobra. I don't know what the ant plug types are, but they both have the same screw on type that the cb does. Hope this helps to shed som light.

Post a picture of what you have?

Try emailing the companies that made these units and they should be able to tell you when they were made, and get the owners and users manuals so you can have an idea how to use it, or if it has to be used with other equipment.

I would try to find a HAM or CB forum and see what gurus you find there.

148 GTL, Good Unit!

I have run this radio for years, back when I drove OTR. They are a great radio. If you have a " GOOD " radio shop around, thay are capable ( disclaimer here, this is totaly ILLEGAL ) of going above, and below the regular 40 channel am freq's. There was a version called a 148 DX, around for awhile. I was accused many times of being a " base " station, due to exellent Modulation, and a good antenna. My deadkey wattage was only around 2 watts, and swung around 30 on a good meter. Running a 125 watt kicker, on the bootleg channels, you'd be suprised how far you could talk. One instance I remember, running in Pa headed to Del, was talking back to a gal in Springfield Mo. Use to hear her all the time, as I ran I-44 in Mo all the time, and recognized her voice. Fun while it lasted, but got into the " Export " radios for not much more $, but more bells and whistles. Al ps- check out radioactive radios . com, can probly find info on your amps.

Thanks, I'll do that and thanks for the info. I have been distracted by the holidays and helping my wife with her retail store that I havent had time for other stuff. I did find a ham club that I will be checking out soon. There might be some guys that can help me out there too.
