I recently removed my cats and straight piped my 95 fj80. I purchased a fuel/air device hoping to "trick" the 02's. The truck running super rich and cant get it to run right. Is there an easy solution for making the 02's give correct data to the ecm without the cats? I saw something about a "diod" that could be installed but nothing more. What I thought would be prettty straight forward has turned into a night mare.

Cats serve a good purpose and are worth reinstalling in my opinion. There are alternatives like the Magnaflow single cat that could reduce the replacement cost though you may have to change more than the cats to get everything plumbed in. I don't know the best option for your '95 or which setup you have (dual inline or dual side-by-side) but wanted to at least throw out encouragement to keep cats in place.

The main benefits in my mind are:
  • Reduction of harmful emissions
  • For some vehicles, that monitor catalyst performance, there are fewer hoops to jump through to keep the ecu/etc. happy if you keep the cats in place
Catalytic converters remove a large percentage of pollutants from vehicle exhaust and industrial stacks, etc. and have played a large role in improving air quality since the 1970s. I think we all benefit, and have benefited, from their wide adoption.

The main downsides I see include:
  • price to purchase/replace
  • theft risk
  • one more thing to break (though they are remarkably reliable if engine kept in good order)
  • extra heat source that can warm floors/cabin
I think it's worth keeping cats in place in spite of the above.

A Google search along the line of "what do catalytic converters do" will yield a lot more information.

I'll also add that when properly functioning (not old and clogged) have nearly no adverse impact on the vehicle's performance. You will get zero horsepower or responsiveness by removing them from most applications. My 3SGTE Celica has a cat directly off the turbo which isn't optimal but Toyota doesn't make mistakes is what I hear around here. LOL

what is the advantage to keeping them?
First and foremost, your engine will magically run properly again once a cat is installed. People behind you, especially on the trail, won’t be forced to breathe in the stink from your tail pipe. What you have done makes zero sense. And once again, your poorly running engine problem will be solved.
