Trying to talk myself into an 80/450. What kind of cargo room am I looking at with the 3rd row folded up or removed? I need to know if I can fit a dog kennel and still have the 2nd row usable. Anyone have some good figures for dimensions or experience with moving a 75lb dog in a kennel in the cargo area...Eric?

That's a question for Eric.
What size kennel?

My 55lb and 75lb dogs fit fine w/o a kennel...

I have two kennels, one is large and the other is extra large. I used to have a heep grand cherokee and the kennel couldn't fit in the cargo area with the seats up. I'll go measure one and check back.

The largest needs about 41"x28" of space

Ive got a 115lb weimerainer and a brittany spaniel and both fit in the back just fine. I can even fit the Weimerainers kennel in the back... I would recommend just getting a full length cargo barrier and keeping them back there like that...Ive got a cheap one and am currently saving(trying to justify) a MIlford cargo barrier.

The distance between the inside wheel wells is about 44" and the depth is definitely more than 28". You should have no problem as long as you remove the 3rd seat(s) and not just fold them up.

Thanks hoser. I figured I could slide the kennel in sideways if I had to but wasn't positive. I was hoping it was at least 41" deep, but that might be wishful thinking.

the 93 fzj I just bought passed the test of fitting my two full grown great danes with one 3rd row seat removed...I guess my wife will let me keep it!!!

Herky,,,
I use a large kennel in the back of mine all the time wiht the third row seats out and the second row in normal position. not a problem at all.

Cargo room is far better than many other non-toyota trucks (e.g. discos, jeeps), but it would be nice if it was a 'tad' bigger. For example, IIRC, my BJ60 had more rear room - maybe just the different shape.

I too have a full size cage (~65lb GWP-X) in the back with the third row seats removed that sits behind a Milford barrier. The cage faces fore and aft (not across) and actually sits on top of a shelf/drawer unit I built and have secured in the rear.

The shelf (1) gives me storage space under the dog cage as it rests on top of the wheel wells (2) brings the cage up to window level to give the og a better view and access to air (3) still has some room above the cage for additional storage (light stuff like a tarp) and (4) allows a full 1/2 of the rear to be used for cargo (vs if you had to place the cage within the wheel wells).

There is also a cubby hole aft of the rear wheel well, under the shelf that I store his leash, dog treats and 4l of water. I can always access this, even whem the truck is full. Similarly, between the cage and the window there is a long space (fore and aft) where I can store other things I need to get to (eg small shovel, first aid kit, ice scraper)

If I don't have enough cargo to keep the cage in its place (it's a tight fit), I use a ratchet strap to strap the cage down.

I also designed the shelf/drawer so that I can still fit and fold down one of the rear (3rd row) seats if needed (never have, so I removed it this summer - I also call it the prisoner box as the person would be sitting behind the cargo barrier). With this set-up, I can take the entire family (3 kids) and dog to our cabin without any cargo in the passenger compartment. If i really need more space (skis, snowshoes, garden stuff, bedding) - I throw on a Thule long box.

Get the 80, you'll love it!

Cheers, Hugh

Just looked at my cage - it's a 'large' 36"L x 24"W x 26"H. The Milford barrier probably takes up 1-2", but no way you would get a 41" cage in fore and aft.

if you're going to go the sideways kennel route, look for one with both front and side doors. it'll save you major pains.

as far as cargo space, we run our 80 as the dedicated hauler. it's got a full length carbox liner in it (all the way up to the tumbled 2nd row), and we can fit our dane, 2 ridgebacks and a basenji back there. the tumbled seats make them think twice about trying any migrations to the front. OTOH my wife's 100 is definitely an inch or two larger in each direction and we have a carbox for that one too, but the dog hair on the headliner is just too painful to try to clean.

if we're heading to a dog show or a field event, we generally travel with a crate or two in the back. it just takes a creative layout. and no, the crate for the dane does not fit in the rear of either cruiser.

for our christas trip to the inlaws, we had to take both cruisers, even with substantial roof storage. two people, four dogs, food, gifts and clothes just wasn't happneing. that was a royal PITA. i'm going to be looking for a low enclosed 5X8 trailer soon.

Great stuff CDN Cruiser. I would love to see a pic of your shelf. I have a similar set up in my 40. It's basicaly just a piece of plywood that lays across the wheel wells so I can fit two kennels in there. The rear heater makes it hard to even put one kennel in the back. This system works great for all the same reason's that you mentioned, but I'm limited to only one passenger.

My smaller kennel is 36" long and looks like it should fit. Thanks again.

No probs, I'll try and post a picture of the set-up in the next few days (when the cage is back in the truck)

Cheers, Hugh

Cavernous space is how I would describe it. Measure it and go. I lined my carpet with an autobox and the dog loves it.

Plenty of room for a dog, mine is an Irish Wolf Hound fits in a treet, I used to have 2 of them one died unfortunatly but he weighed 14 stone, 36 inches at the shoulder and could take food from a man of over 6 Foot plus with his hans held high above him with the dogs back feet still on the ground. I cariried both around in a G-Wagon cargo area which is smaller than that of an 80. however they were loose and not caged
