Wanted to share a recent purchase of a Rola Cargo Carrier and bag (2'x2'x5'). I often make trips to the desert and beach with lots of passengers including an American Bulldog. With loss of packing room, I decided to get a well constructed cargo carrier with a waterproof bag for my last trip to the desert. Good thing I did, we drove out and enjoyed thunderstorms all weekend. On the trip home, I packed up and even added three bags of garbage strapped to the top.

The dead deer I put on my hitch haul don't need waterproofing. But good for you.

Watch the heat from your exhaust I have a friend who had a melt down on a similar set up

Thanks for the heads up, I'll check for heat and make a heat shield if necessary.

I use a waterproof bag up on the roof. Works great. Advantage is I maintain my departure angle, disadvantage obiously is higher COG. I think your setup is not designed for off road use (horrible depature angle, possible stress failure from washboard roads, etc), but if it works for you great.

Do you stick that roof bag on the roof metal or it is suspended somehow? Are you worried about it shifting and causing the paint to mar?

I have a rack so not touching the roof itself, but I do put a piece of cardboard or something to isolate it from the metal to avoid rubbing the finish off. They sell a mat for that very purpose but I went with a home made solution.
