The PO never replaced the gaskets on the carb insulator when the carb was rebuild. I have the new gaskets, but the old gaskets are baked on pretty good. It took a few days to chisel away at one side, but the bottom side is a real, you know what. Has anyone used a chemical base remover when removing these gaskets? I am curious to know if they would effect the plastic housing, possibly melting it, or something like that.

try using a razor blade for a box knife.

Gaskets? Do you mean the gaskets that are fused to the insulator block? From what I know, if those are bad, then the whole thing needs to be replaced. It's Not hard once you get the carb off, it's just a $100 dollar part.

Wait on that one. If you mean RTV, then that is a big no-no. RTV reacts with gasoline. I believe it decomposes.

I am putting this much concern into this because when I rebuilt my carb, I didn't want to fork up $100 for some big gasket. The general consensus (sp?) was that I should buy a new one and make it as toyota intended it to be.

The gasket material is permanently bonded to the top & bottom of the insulator. That would explain why it took a few days to chisel it apart.

At least you've only fawked up one side of the insulator.
Wipe any grunge off the insulator and manifold, now reinstall.

So is it ok to install new gaskets and reuse the old insulator, or recommended to replace the insulator with a new one?

I finally got the insulator off and the surfaces are perfectly flat. That thing was really on there good. I sanded the two sides perfectly flat, so the new gaskets will seal well. The insulator must have been bad because parts of it came right off, and others were real biznatchs. A couple of sources said to "carefully" remove the bonded gaskets, so i'll give them a try before replacing the whole thing. Once I get the egr pipe fitting off the lower end, everything should be an easy assembly. Finger's crossed.
