Got a question about DMV insurance regs for NC.

I'm tooling with the idea of fixing the breaks on the Suburban and driving that for a DD while selling the mercedes. I just find I need the extra space for hauling things (which I do alot) and with my sister getting ready to sell her Pick up (my normal hauling things) it is making more sense to me. That and the Cruisers terrible gas mileage make it an impractical hauling rig.

When I started driving the Mercedes in May and stopped driving the suburban due to no brakes I took the Suburban off of the insurance and registered and put the mercedes on. I did not however turn in the plates for the Suburban because it was never something we had to do back in LA but i'm learning here that the DMV wants plates back.

My question is if I put the suburban back on the insurance is this going to throw a red flag up to the DMV and make them think I was driving around without insurance?? Am I going to have to re-register it even though I have the tags and registration that is good till March. Will I have to pay a fine?? If so how much??
I need a little guidance and direction on this one.... as I really don't want to have to stand in a 3 hour DMV line to get them answered.

If you kept the plates, it boils down to TWO things...a)did u pay vehicle tax and 2) yes...if u had plates you are supposed to have if insured. My understanding is they spot check tags vs insurance - then if u get caught they'll send u a nastygram stating u have 30 days to show proof of insurance... Take it from a former poor kid...I did it a couple of times. You will throw a flag..sorry. It boils down to proving you didnt driving it uninsured.

I would suggest surrender the tags reapply in a week get new tags and insurance..there'll be no questions.

That is what I was thinking also... i'm going to drop the tags off tomorrow..... still not 100% that i'll get it back on the road but this will give me some time and wiggle room.

Lydia is a title office regular and you should have gotten a letter from DMV to surrender your tag. Normally, a $50 fee and proof of insurance. If tag not expired, get insurance, drive the SOB and wait for letter. Or go wait 3 hrs with $50 and insurance, your call.

I think if you have had another vehicle registered and insured in your name you are in not trouble. You had insurance your car was only in the shop for a while. Best thing will be going to dmv. The ladys at the dmv in old pineville told me the mid of the month is their bussiest time. Because registration renewal. Good luck

Call 704-982-3854 and say "hello" during or after message and they will answer and tell you what you need to do, and you can remain anonymous. You gotta eventually give them their $50 either now or when you renew. It's not that big of deal til you are ready to drive it and get insurance reinstated. Call Lydia Monday and she will check on it for you. NEVER go to DMV on a Friday!!!
Our DMV is 15 minutes in and out, so do it here and that leaves us 45 minutes to hit the bars!
