Hey all,

I'm happy to report the wife let me off the hook and I have a "guys" weekend coming up! We are looking for a place to camp that won't be overrun with RV's, kids, etc. I thought this might be a good opportunity to find a cool camping spot that I could access with the LC.

I don't expect anyone to reveal their secret camping spots but any ideas would be appreciated.

Since this will take place in the next few weeks my group was thinking the western part of the state may be a bit cooler.

Thanks!

URE! lol... Just ride trails till you find a good spot to pull off the trail, make a fire and drink some brews. ALWAYS FUN!!!

bluejack,
I had a great time with my family at the US Forest Service campground at Mortimer (Wilson Creek Gorge). The campground is small, but updated and well-kept. It is at least 8 miles from the nearest paved road and very close to the Brown Mountain OHV area. I also noticed that there were several primitive campsites along the different USFS roads in/out of the area.

PM if you want some additional info.

Thanks guys,

The weekend is actually the same as the trail ride! I will be promoting that and will register ASAP if it pans out. I have to take into account the majority vote though. Unfortunately no other LC owners in the bunch. We are still hashing out some work details and as such don't know how much time we will have to travel, etc.

Anyway, thanks for all the help. Maybe I'll see you soon.

PS-2000 LC with 285's and no other mods....can I get far on the trails?

you'll do fine at URE. Just not on every trail.. But most hard obstacles have easier bypasses. From my previous experiences at least

pisgah

if you go to the fish hatchery in brevard and park in the left end of the parking lot there is a trail from the corner of the lot. stay to the right, about 50 yards cross a bridge keep going to second bridge plenty of places between bridges or after second bridge. also you are only minutes away from the parkway, graveyard fields, wal-mart, whatever you need

Think they are closed now.

Cullwohee upper and lower balds are closed to vehicular traffic. You can still park just below the lower bald (if what has been reported to me is correc) and have a very short hike up to the lower bald or a fairly short hike to the upper bald.

As far as camping on the balds you would need clarification from the FS. Last time I talked to a ranger he wouldn't clarify if camping was allowed on the balds.

The 'road' to the parking area (at least last year) was graded and graveled. 2WD could make it with high clearance.
