Hey folks,

I am quite interested in putting together an amateur radio setup in my 80, but I am having some trouble figuring out where to start. I don't know/understand what type of system I would be using, and therefore what type of certification I require.

-What system(s) is everyone using? I see references to 2M, 70cm etc, and I don't know what that means.

-What is the Canadian certification required for the appropriate system?

-Really the main question here is where should I start looking for information? I have tried some of the online tests, but a lot of the questions are way over my head. Are there any good books or information sources starting with the basics?

Any info is appreciated!

Radio Amateurs of Canada will be the best place to get started. Once you locate a local club or store in your area, you will be able to get lots of assistance throw them.

2m(VHF) and 70cm(UHF) are both refernces to amateur radio frequence ranges and you will require your basic certification.

Hope this gets you pointed in the right direction.

Thanks Drew! I have found a local club in my area; their next meeting is in a couple weeks. I'll definitely go and ask lots of questions. Just so I don't look like a total fool, I did some more searching tonight and found a nice simple overview of the amateur radio here.

Looks like the Basic Qualification will get me started on VHF and UHF, and if I manage an 80% I can get 'em all!

Licensing of Amateur Radio in Canada is regulated by Industry Canada. It is illegal to operate on the amateur bands without an Amateur Radio Operator Certificate which has three levels of qualification as follows:

Basic Qualification: an examination of 100 questions.
-access all amateur bands above 30 MHz
-use a maximum of 250 watts DC transmitter input power
-build and operate all station equipment, except for "home-made" transmitters
-Basic with honours (80% or above score) - access to all amateur bands below 30 MHz
-There is no Morse code requirement on this test.

Advanced Qualification: an examination of 50 questions.
-access all amateur bands below 30 MHz
-use maximum transmitter power of 1000 watts DC input
-build and operate transmitting equipment
-establish repeaters and club stations
-remotely control fixed stations, including the use of radio links
-There is no Morse code requirement on this test.

Morse Code (5 wpm with Basic or Basic and Advanced Certificate):
-access to all amateur bands below 30 MHz
