I had a little vibration and some rotational play in the tcase output shaft so i figured Id pull em and take a look. It started with this...

I assume it would be best to try and find a used transmission right?

Next onto the transfer case. I immediately noticed tons of backlash and wear in the high speed gear and the idler gear

Can I still use these? New ones are $$$$$$. Any other ideas are welcomed.
Thanks

Appears as though it has been run without proper lubrication for quite some time, considering the condition of those teeth on the high speed gears.

The splines on the transmission output shaft are garbage as well.

Junk the whole thing?

Pretty much....

There are likely some smaller pieces that could be used again; nose cone, top cover, shifter mechanism off the nose cone, pto cover, rear parking brake housing/speedometer drive gear mount, etc.

Your best bet would be to purchase a known good transmission and transfer case assembly.

Thanks....figures. I was kind of hoping someone had some kind of jb weld trick or was going to say theirs looked worse. Sounds easy enough, I just have to find one. The price tags on the warranteed stuff is a little beyond my budget though.

Guess Ill start cruising the mud-ads. Unless anyone reading this has an extra one they wouldnt mind selling.

yup, steve mailed it on the head. buy a good used combo, it'll be the cheapest way to get the 40 back on the road. take a good loo at the rest of the parts before you junk them; hopefully the main shaft and front output are still ok. i kinda doubt it though......:frown:
