On this picture where the rear main seal and the upper pan are? If you can that is. Just wondering since these are the two main places that this motor seems to leak from and i'm not sure which is which. I have a leak towards the rear of the block but i'm not sure if it is either.
Nope not on that picture, need a shot of the back of the engine with the transmission off to show the rear main, that would also be the best to show the pan arch seal
Neither are fun repairs, one requires removal of the transmission and transfer case. The other requires the engine to be lifted off its mounts and the pan removed
Dang... to bad you didn't ask before you removed the engine .
You can see the rear main and pan arch by pulling the access cover on the front side of the transmission/bell housing. Put a small mirror in the port hole and hold it up against the large gear (bell crank IIRC) with your finger. Shine a flashlight on the mirror and you can see the rear main and pan arch that way.
crawl under your truck, there are 4 major pieces of metal in the area we are interested in,
1. the place where you drain you oil is the lower oil pan, it is painted black and made of stamped sheet metal, it bolts into the: 2. upper oil pan witch is cast bare aluminum runs from the front of the motor to the transmission, the upper pan bolts to the: 3. block witch is cast iron may have a thin coat of black paint and/or surface rust, behind all of these is a: 4. large cast aluminum bell with a bunch of bolts arround it, that is the transmissions bell housing,
the apex where the joints of 2, 3 and 4 meet is where the rear main lives, the pan arch is a few inches away in a semi circle arround the rear main
From that area, I'd suspect what I feel is the majority of "rear main leaks" on the 80 - simply years of the drive shaft zirc fitting tossing grease up there. It eventually thins out and runs down. Mine looks like it has a rear main leak. Cleaned it up completely with degreaser once and the "rear main" was mysteriously gone. Eventually it again began to look like a rear main leak again after a few shaft greasings. I've held this viewpoint before on this list and I'll say it again. Take a look at the thrown grease patterns and see if this is a possibility on your own vehicle. Trust me, a mechanic will not tell you that the rear main was not the issue when he's done with the job. He'll just take your money and thank you for your business.
The top 3 red arrows are true oil leaks? If so, you may have joined the HG club. I believe AndrewsReef had an oil leak at that location and he replaced the HG. Check the valve cover gasket at the rear of the engine. If you're lucky that's all it will need.
dang, next time, don't pull your engine out just so you can take a picture to ask where is what...! You can take the photo with the thing still in, you know.... sheesh....

That's not my motor, stole it from another thread. I had a closer inspection of where mine is leaking and i really think it's from the back of the valve cover. I'm not trying to avoid the reality that it could be the HG, but it seems as if it's leaking from above the HG. I'll see if i can get some better pics.
