From the JC Whintey website for 1/4" spacers:

Choose 4-, 5-, 6- or 8-lug. Please Note: Not for station wagons, vans, RVs, trailers or off-road vehicles. Longer studs or lug bolts may be required.

All this talk about spacers and nobody mentions stud length ?
if you change from a steel to an alloy that needs a spacer.
you will most likely also need to change the wheel studs
the alloy wheel is usually thicker by an average of 3/8" or more
plus the thickness of the spacer will be less threads threaded up on the lug nut
one of my cruisers only had 2 threads on each nut because of the PO not taking into account this problem
this is a dangerous problem and should always be part of spacer discussions
